Post subject:  Oil spray

It appears that I have oil sprayed all over the back of my CRD.... I seem to remember a post mentioning something similar.
I did stand on it on the freeway this afternoon. Did I clean out the EGR? Changing to 5-40w tomorrow.

Are you talking about a liquid oil or black carbon dust?

I'm talking liquid oil like someone flicked a paint brush at it.

Yep, that's the stuff. Been scrubbing it off the back ends of buses for over 20 years. Are you running any CCV protection? Next look at the turbo for passing oil. Cleaning up the oil contaminated CAC/intercooler is a must.

If it's oil then you must have an oil leake somewhere, like from CCV system, oil filter loose or leaking from oil pan or engine some where. If you are sure it is coming out the tail pipe the you have a bad turbo seal and better get it fixed before the imfamous engine runaway happens. That can be a scarry situation if it happens at the wrong time (is any time good?) and you cream someone or yourself.

OK, I'm scared! Nothing is leaking visibly either under the hood or under the car. I don't know enough yet to take big stuff like the turbo apart. I probably need a manual to a teacher before I can do that. my '65 Chevelle was so much easier!
If it only happened once, do I still need to worry? What do I tell the dealer without sounding like a dumb broad? Could it have anything to do with B 50 in the tank or the O-40W?

It only happenbed once? It would not have anything to do with the B50 or the synthetic 0w-40 oil. If someone overfilled the the oil when they checked it or did an oil change and now it has quit, then it's has cleared itself and probably nothing to worry about in the future. Has the dealer or someone changed the oil prior to this happening???

The car has 800 mi. on it and the dealer is the only one who has touched anything under the hood so far. I'm having the oil changed to Rotella today and the Fumato installed, so I hope to be able to look around while it is on the rack.

Try this, it's simple. Check inside the end of the tailpipe with you finger. It will be sooty, but should be powdery dry soot. If it is oily, sticky, or cakes together it's usually oil passing through the engine. One other consideration, did you run over some spilled oil/fuel on the highway? I used to get a lot of stuff drafting on the back, reduced considerably by adding slash guards.

Just 800 miles (new) is this correct? I assume you got the oil changed as planned before reading this post. So did you happen to check the oil level before the change, was it using much? You may want to remove the turbo to intercooler CAC hose and take a look for your own reference point. If you start using oil, it's going somewhere, usually into the intercooler hoses.

You guys are great! Upon further investigation, here's what I found: Oil was also down the side of the car where mud/water would splash, indicating I probably ran over a puddle of something. Oil was down just a fraction of an inch, nothing significant. I put in 6 qt. 6 oz. to compensate for the oil still in the filter. I'll check it in the morning to make double sure. BUT the mechanic (a former student) did point out to me a leak at the transfer case output seal. He also estimated the time needed to repair it, so the dealer won't be telling me they need it all day.

The CRD created quite a stir in the place. "Hey guys look at this!" It was fun being a relative expert and spitting out HP and torque, MPG and why I was changing the oil at 800 miles. I also got a quick primer from him on what's where under the hood.

Without mud flaps in the back, will all the road crud wind up on the back of my car like the oil did?

You will want to check the oil regularly. The dipstick will likely be "off" about 1/8 of an inch (reads low). Overfilling will just cause more oil in the intercooler hoses.
On the transfer case seal leak, common. Mine was done under warranty after the first oil change, they replaced both but they had to order the seals.
On the splash guards, went on after the first couple of snowstorms. Got tired of scraping through the slush to find the door handles. Noticed afterwards that it helped keep the crud down the the back end too. I used off-the-shelf molded style Grobralski, available at Advance. Will need to cut a notch in them for use on the front. Jeep dealer also sells a similiar style.

Get used to the attention. I got chased down the produce aisle by some guy that wanted to see mine. Common to get the pumps shut-off by gas station attendants thinking you grabbed the wrong nozzle. One night, had to go inside, argue with the attendant (the guy looked @ 12), and get him to come outside to look the the jeep for himself before turning the pump back on. Fotunately I was in a good mood that night.

Zonie the correct fill is 6 qts and 12.8 oz I just do 6 & 12 as it is easy to measure and make no real difference in dipstick reading.

It seems not all CRD's have a dipstick that reads correctly, some read low when filled after oil change with propper amount of oil. My did stick is not the original, it was replaced becaused it was shipped bent so badly that it had to be replaced. Mine reads about 1/8 inch low when filled with the 6 qt and 12 oz of oil when changed. The 6 oz you left out of yours might bring it to the full mark most likely. Remember .4 (four tenths) of a qt is 12.8 oz's.

Attention, yeah I'm always having people at the pump asking questions.

My wife got pulled over(cop) and asked if she liked the diesel.....that was the only reason.

We fill at a co-op unattended pumps and have had people (farmers?) in their PU trucks pull in and look like they were going to warn or stop us, but they never say anything, but just drive off. I think it is the turbodiesel badges on the fenders and back window and the green gas cap is what stops them.

I had to show the attendant the green fuel cap before he believed me. First started the engine for him, didn't believe me. Guess it rattled less than his college beater.
