Timing belt should be changed at 100k miles or about every 8 years.
Its not much harder than any other timing belt. You just need to use the proper tools specific for this engine.
EGR should be deleted to ensure long engine life.
Turbo inlet and boost hoses tend to deteriorate and develop holes due to oil contamination. Installing a Provent helps reduce the contamination.

But the list doesn't stop there...

The number one cause of hard starting and poor running is air-in-fuel.
Replace the fuel filter assembly, fix the connections back at the tank, and install a lift pump.

The only thing special about the Liberty CRD is the engine. Everything else is pure Jeep. So you have all the standard Jeep problems too.

There is a path to get this vehicle to a reliable state which requires some work and money; but once you get it there, it can be a fun and reliable vehicle to own and operate!!! :D
But please do as pap says and read the NOOB guide, it will give you a lot of insight as what is needed and / or required as a Jeep CRD owner....
Then ask any questions you may have, many knowledgeable people on this forum willing to help!

Dang, I wish I would get on that path. We haven't seen anything fun or reliaBle or economical about our Jeep yet.

The path to get you there for do-it-yourselfers:
Timing belt & water pump replacement
Install IN-TANK Lift pump (No. 1 rated mod)
Upgrade Boost Hoses to silicone hoses
Remove EGR, EGR Cooler, & FCV (Weeks elbow kit)
Replace ceramic glow plugs with steel ones
    Install ProVent CCV filter
Remove CAT/choke point & OEM muffler and install free flowing muffler like Flowmaster
Install Secondary 2-3 micron fuel filter (to protect CP3)
Install better torque converter, i.e. Hemi, Suncoast, etc...& replace transmission front pump. Install Transgo kit
Reflash ECM with do-it-yourself tune for better performance and fuel milage
Upgrade coil springs, front & rear, and install good state of the art shocks & struts along with any other suspension parts that need replacing
    Better tires if required..

Optional as time and money allows:
Install ARP Head studs
Replace rocker arms
Replace Exhaust Valves to prevent breakage (per geordi)

The above items will get you there! The PATH is not cheap nor is it without some work; but it is DOABLE if you want the desired outcome!!!!!

ps; there may be some others that I may have missed, add if I did!!!!

Valves are suggested.

If you are in the market for a CRD that has everything already done on the engine and a zero mile engine to boot - send me an email. I have a khaki 05 sport that had the short block rebuilt with all new bottom end by a dealership, and then I personally built everything from the pistons up. New head gasket, valves, rockers, studs, egr delete, intake elbow, metal glow plugs, timing belt and water pump, performance engine tune, all fresh fluids, and about 10k on it since the rebuild.

I'm willing to deliver it anywhere in the USA for actual expenses. Asking 12k, or best offer.
