I'm about to embark on fixing up my pile of damage short blocks. I know some folks have gotten away with just replacing the trashed cylinder (s), and I'm going to check all of the rod bearings because the bolts are cheap. But, is it crazy to not check the mains? I wonder if anyone knows if the mains are more likely to get damaged if there's a bunch of coolant dumped into the crank-case? And if the coolant didn't get into the oil, will a massively overheated top end take out main bearings?

I guess for $150 in seals and bolts I should just pull the cranks also :juggle:

I'd say that #4 rod and #5 main bearings would be first to get starved because they are last in line.

The #1 reason for rod/main bearing failure is lack of lubrication. Water contamination would reduce the lubrication properties of the oil.

Thanks Flash! I guess I could check #5 and install a new main seal without too much labor and cost. Hmm, but at that far in why stop. It's sourcing several of the correct o-rings that makes it a pain. I did a big order from the UK once, and I ended up with the wrong parts, never got all of them after many emails. Apparently there are several different variations of our engine. Different turbos, oil coolers, and who knows what else.

Paying $20-$50 for one seal stateside doesn't work out too well either if you need 5 of each. I refuse to get robbed for o-rings with 5000% mark up.
Try to source a water pump front half to back half o-ring :ALONE:

Have you checked Graingers for O-rings? Most every size and quality available there and pretty reasonable cost.

Any good hose and hydraulic shop should also have the ability to bury you in any size o-ring you want.

Thanks, I'll try to figure out how to not pay $10 for a $.10 o ring. I'm thinking I should really tear these blocks down all the way to make sure I don't have to do it twice.
