After much research, I decided to pull the trigger and bought a transmission that is out of a 2015 Dodge Ram with 1200 miles on it. From everything I have read the 545RFE(made to 2011) and the 65RFE(2012 on) are identical transmissions. I decided to go for it when I read a post just the other day that someone with a 2003 Ram 1500 replaced theirs with one out of a 2013 Ram 1500 with no issues. Worst case, I will have to replace the valve body and solenoid pack. I will be routing new cooler hoses and the biggest transmission cooler I can fit. I still have my original TC which is the upgraded TC "Euro" but I didn't know that until I had the transmission out. I will install new filters, Havoline ATF4 and a PML deep pan. I will post my results in the coming weeks. |

I would advise against a larger cooler unless you tow in death valley on a regular basis. I towed 8,000 pounds (crazy) over Donner pass in the summer with no problems with the stock cooler. How do you know that you have a Euro converter by looking at it? I throw tc's in the trash all of the time because I don't think they necessarily stamp anything on the upgrade ones. Recently I pulled one that looks newer and has an 'A' stamped on it with a swipe of orange paint, is that what you have? |

Same goes for the deep pan, it is easy to overcool these transmissions, unless maybe you live far south |

What is considered to be "overcooling" for the transmission? And why would that be a bad thing? |

A transmission needs to get warm enough to get the moisture out of the fluid. |

Poor shifting I think do to viscosity. I get delayed shifts in mine when too cold. Not an issue in the summer though |

Why not use a thermostat bypass for the trans cooler? I get delayed shifts when cold too. But once engine coolant gets up to 120F it starts shifting normally. Its definitely coolant temp thats the trigger as I see no correlation to a specific trans temp. I dont know if this is a feature of the TCM or ECM. I am currently running a Hemi TCM. Most sites say that 170-200F is the best trans temp. But they also say cooler is better for fluid life. While cruising at highway speeds, my trans temp is usually 110-140F. City driving is usually 150-170F. Ive only had my trans temp gauge for a few months so we will see what happens come summer time. |

My F150 runs at 195F+ all the time because it has a solenoid valve to control flow to the cooling loop. I can be coasting down I 80 for 10 miles straight and it wont drop below 195. |

The ecu (or tcu?)won't let it shift into 3rd (or was it 4th?) Until the temp is up to a certain point. My delayed 2 to 3 shift is much worse when cold as well. Extra transmission cooling will also exacerbate the slow warm up of the engine a little. I am running the 203 degree stat and can't get up to temp even with most of the radiator blocked, but I think it's a bad stat as it got hot once from a blown coolant fitting. On the old transmission, I thought maybe it wasn't bad enough that I could save the old/new torque converter(like everything with these CRD's I thought replacing the TC with a new one would fix the shutter and then the whole thing failed) and any of the old parts, but no.

Transmission is in the jeep. Bell housing bolts are in, transfer case and cross member are installed. Torque converter bolts, cooler flush, new lines, electrical connections and all new fluids. My friend has a starscan tool and will put the transmission in to learn mode for me. I also installed a new solenoid pack - white connector, and filters. |

I am here to report that the transmission is in and all is well. My friend came over, using his Alltel, he put the transmission in to quick learn and after that the transmission was shifting perfect. So now my 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD has a 2015 65RFE transmission with 1200 miles on it. |

If you can run the 65rfe without any real modifications, can you run the 66rfe with a little bit of tuning possibly, with TCM As well? |

To be honest, I didn't even bother to try, but I would imagine it would work since the shifting is based on the input,output and pressure sensors. I went with the 65rfe because I figured mopar worked out all or most of the issues based on reviews I've read on the 2015 Ram 1500's. I know the 2013 mopar transmission had issues with the castings, so I stayed away from the 2012/2013 years. I know the gearing in the 66rfe is different. Too adventurous for me, I just wanted the thing to be fixed so I can use it instead of it being a lawn decoration. |
