Post subject:  TSBs for New Jeep Liberty Sport CRD

This is my first post -- please forgive any mistakes I'm likely to make :? .

I was looking over some of the posts and figuring that other newbies like me might want some recommendations on what to do as new ower of a diesel Liberty. I noted that there were some technical service bulletins (TSB) and advice on being patient with the fuel consumption until the engine is broken in.

Three quick questions:
1. What TSBs should we get the dealer to attend to early on (my vehicle was manufactured in August 2005)?
2. What is the break-in period for the diesel engine (note: my dealer says that there is no break-in period)?
3. I noticed that the Jeep got about 22 mpg on my first long trip doing an average of 75 mph. At what point should I see the mileage start to move up towards what the EPA claims?

Thanks for any guidence you can offer.

Warm regards,
Shawn

Hi sbohner. First off, welcome to the forum. You're bound to like it as a Liberty (KJ) owner, and as a CRD owner. This is the best place for both!

The best place to post CRD specific questions is in the "Liberty CRD...Love that Torque!!!" section, instead of in the Newbie Info area. This section is designed more for giving new people a glance into some commonly used terms and the such. Think of it as the Frequently Asked Questions section...part II. After a question is asked and answered multiple times in one of the other sections, someone will come into this section (or FAQ) and write a detailed description of it for everyone's benefit.

If you look in the Liberty CRD...Love that Torque!!! section, you'll see a topic called "Sticky: CRD specific TSB's." This is the place for all the TSB that are related specifically to our CRDs. And have a blast digging back through all the other discussions. There is a never-ending book of information contained in this forum.

And check out the MidAtlantic LOST section and the Carolina LOST section. We're planning some runs not too far from you in the coming months!

I would post this in the Diesel section, as it will most likely get more hits there.

Welcome! The guys are right, you'll get more responses in the CRD section so I'm moving it over there. Good luck.

Howdy. Check the sticky for TSBs on the CRD section, that in this CRD forum. You'll need to pay particular attention to the TSB that explains how to check the tranmission build date to see if yours falls within the TSB issued for serious parts replacement. The build date for the tran. is on a label on the driver's side of the tran.

Also, 18-008-06 would apply (no symptoms needed) if it has not been done. If it has been done, there will be a sticker under the hood on the sheet metal framing at the radiator. It should list the date of the flash and the TSB number, as required by law.

As to break in, someone else can address that. Your dealer may be technically correct, since the engine uses synthetic from the beginning. Cummins, on the other hand, recommends that their B engine be used with non-synthetic for something like 8k to 10k miles. This ain't no Cummins. I just drive em, and let the breakin handle itself. You can check the owners manual and see if they have a maximum speed for a given break in period. I do not know.

Good luck.

Post subject:  Thanks for the good advice...

Hi Groucho,

Thanks for the good information... I will follow-up with a local dealer here in Blacksburg. They haven't sold very many CRDs, but they said they will service mine. This means that I will need to pay particular attention to the TSBs and the like.

So far, I've liked the Liberty diesel -- it's got torque, a good turning radius, great handling, and character for a working vehicle. We are upgrading from a 1999 Subaru Outback and buying American again. I look forward to the prospects.

Again, thanks for the good advice.

Warm regards,
Shawn
