| Post subject: | Battery tray |
Hello! I need to replace my battery tray on my CRD and I'm not convinced when I do a search that it will fit as it always shows up fitting the V6 gas model. From my reading it looks like the battery on the CRD's is a different size then the gas thus the try would be different. Anyway, Can someone help with the correct part number for the CRD battery tray? Thank you!! Ken |

For what you would likely pay for an O.E. battery tray, you are probably better off purchasing the upgrade battery tray from Sasquatch Motorsports. https://shop.sasquatchparts.com/product ... -2-8l-crd/ This tray give you the ability to use the larger capacity Group 65 battery for more cranking power and more reserve capacity. This tray will also allow you to install a Webasto TSL17 heater at a later time. Why mention this? A Webasto heater gives you the convenience of pre-heating your engine up to 170 degrees very quickly no matter how cold it is outside, (the TSL17 has about 12.5 times the heating capacity of your block heater and does not require a plug-in). Pre-heating any internal combustion engine before cranking it to start is very good for it and increases the life of the engine significantly. Using a Webasto or similar heater also saves fuel as diesel fueled engine heaters are very efficient, way more so than idling the engine. Webasto heaters should be mandatory on all new diesel vehicles to cut down on idling to warm the engine up. |

Yup, Sasquatch tray is a very nice unit. I installed it back in January with a Odessey PC-1750 battery, which is also a nice piece. |

If you want to go cheap, you can use the gas engine tray and modify it with a sharp utility knife. Works fine. You need to cut an extrusion off one side and trim the ridge that is sized for the smaller battery. But the hold down is in the right spot and the battery is quite secure. $5.00 at pick a part. |

Perhaps, but the Sasquatch Motorsports tray has the way better build quality and the highly recommended benefit of a place to install a Webasto TSL17 heater. As a Class 1 license holder who has driven in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable, preheating your engine BEFORE starting it does great things for the longevity and the fuel economy of your diesel powered vehicle. Considering all of the problems experienced by CRD owners with their glow plugs, it is my opinion that the BEST way to resolve these problems, (and have the other benefits described above as well), is to simply do an end-run around the problem and put your engine in a condition where it NEVER requires the glow plugs to come on in any circumstance, no matter how cold it gets outside. With a Webasto heater installed, you can switch out the good performing but fragile ceramic glow plugs to the durable but poorly performing steel glow plugs and NEVER have to worry about starting your CRD. |

I agree to some degree depending on where you live! But it may be a serious overkill (Webasto heater) for some parts of the country where the temperature's never gets much below freezing for any long periods of time... |

'03-'07 KJ's all used the same group 34 size battery,only '02's used a group 25. |

But who doesn't love overkill?

I agree to some degree depending on where you live! But it may be a serious overkill (Webasto heater) for some parts of the country where the temperature's never gets much below freezing for any long periods of time... Overkill in this case is good.... the Webasto TSL17 heater is thermostatically controlled, the engine never gets to more than 170 degrees Fahrenheit. When it reaches that temperature, the heater shuts off for a while, and then turns on again when the engine temperature drops, (How much of a drop? I do not know... I'll check with Webasto Thermo & Comfort North America for the details). So there is no risk of boil-overs. The TSL17 is designed to heat 3,000 to 4,000 lb commercial diesel engines... the time it would take to heat the little R428 in the CRD makes it very convenient to use on short notice. About 30 minutes would be all that is required even in the coldest weather. If you have the ability to do so, it is simply a good idea to pre-heat your engine before cranking it to start - no matter how hot it is outside. It is easier on the engine, the starting system, and you waste no fuel running the engine to warm it up before putting any load on it. Anybody who has had a commercial diesel vehicle has learned that pre-warming an engine before working it is one of the pre-requisites for making the engine last a long time. Traditionally this was done by running the engine, but that uses a lot of fuel, unnecessarily wears the engine and fouls the engine oil. With a Webasto heater, you get the advantages of pre-warming the engine with virtually none of the disadvantages, (O.K., so it burns a little fuel... it is a heck of a lot more efficient than running the engine!). Another advantage of a Webasto heater is that you NEVER have to go looking for an electrical outlet. Great for camping, hunting, any outdoor adventures where you have no access to electricity for your block heater. |

Any group 65 will fit, but make sure you get an AGM type that is flat across the top, to save yourself having to build top spacers. Lead-acid is cheaper and they fit, but having done it, I doubt that it's worth the annoyance of having to jerry-rig a redneck fix and try to make it look presentable. |
