| Post subject: | CRD vs H3 |
Went camping this weekend, had the Jeep loaded down and the bike rack on the back with 2 bikes. Enough stuff the rear was sitting lower than the front. As I am leaving the village to come back to the valley I end up behind an H3 with dealer tags. The H3 slowed down to pull up beside me. On the first hill, he takes off and starts going up it. I had the cruise on, so I figured I had seen the last of him, and good riddance. After we crest the tiny little hill, he slows back down beside me, glances over and then takes off. Hmmm, so like most Hummer drivers he must be a moron trying to compensate for something. So the evil part of me starts to kick in. Needless to say, I slowed down to the flow of traffic at the top and he sped up on the downhill, catching me again and passing me, but then slowing down to stay within a couple car lengths. Others figured out what was going on, and then joined in the fray. In addition to the H3, I ended up with a Chevy fullsize, a lifted Ford truck, a BMW x series suv, and a full size Lexus sedan running the next climb, which was the longest and about 7%. The H3 fell first, blew his doors off again and the others could not hang with me at first. I ate them all soundly, except the Lexus and the BMW. The BMW and Lexus got past me when the road got windy and the KJ would not take the turns as fast (Yes, still going up hill). The guy in the Lexus opened up late though, or he would have kept up. The X was pretty impressive in the handling department and once he finally got the thing wound up- it moved very nicely up the hill. The temp was around 100 degrees and I won't describe the speeds on the internet. The temp gauge stayed dead in the middle, so I am not too worried about overheating. Anyway, I am sure some people went home wondering... what the h3*l is a CRD? Especially the local Hummer dealer. |

Those straight 5s are a POS. They are so slow and underpowered. Even in the colorado pickup i test droved when i was shopping for a 4x4 was slow. It had no low end torque you needed to get to the close to the red line to feel the pull. Thanks god i got the liberty instead. The CRD should has 295 ft ibs of torque it should blow it away. And you are right not too many people know about the CRD. I havent heard about it until i went jeep shopping, but at that time i already had my eyes set on the renegade. Too bad they did not offer a CRD in those. Many dealers over here know the competition even their special offers and model line up to compare it with their models. |

I'd love to have seen that. I know the hills around here! Which highway were you on? |

The straight 5 was not my favorite motor when I was truck shopping. The Canyon just didn't do it for me, and not just 'cause of the motor. I didn't like the feel of it during interstate driving. It seemed to have some pretty heavy stability issues. I didn't drive the H3 when I was truck shopping. I gave up on the Colorado/Canyon/H3 line after driving the Canyon. I might have tried it out if they were offering a diesel though. I probably would have been disappointed in the stability of the truck, as I was in the stability of the Canyon...but I would have driven a diesel H3...probably wouldn't have bought it...but I would have driven it. I don't understand why people have to play stupid like that H3 was on the Interstates. That just drives me crazy. I mean, trying to compensate for a pathetic self-image by buying a specific vehicle is bad enough...getting your doors blown off by a KJ that's loaded down with gear...well that's just funny. I love pulling away from people on hills in this thing. It's tough to make the thing sweat, that's for sure. I would have done the exact same thing as you in this situation. I would have made sure he ate a big cloud of black diesel smoke too (not sure if you SMOKED him or not since you didn't mention it). |

Ian Its about time they got back to their roots, being a former Humvee mechanic in the U.S. Army and having a best friend who has owned a 1997 H1 Wagon since new... I have never considered the H2 or H3 to be anything but a disgrace to the Hummer name. Why? 1. A real Hummer/Humvee has a diesel engine 2. A real Hummer/Humvee can withstand military abuse and can face up to about anything mother nature can throw at it 3. A real Hummer/Humvee is not simply a beefed up GM SUV with big tires that somewhat resembles a real Hummer/Humvee Even though it is "civilianized" I do have respect for the Hummer H1, especially the Alpha model with the 6.6L Duramax/Allison tranny combo. Unfortunately (from what I've heard) GM is going to discontinue that model within the next few years: http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/060515-6.htm I think the H1 is primarily being discontinued due to the U.S. Military coming out with a new BEAST of a light armored vehicle to replace the HUMVEE and also because demand for the H1 is pretty much dead at this point. |

87 to Payson to 260 (I believe it was 260... 2 something--the GPS does the thinking now adays). I did not smoke him out-- it just does not smoke much at all anymore. Did when new. I think the power service that I have been adding helps out a bunch with the smoking. Not sure. I can see the particulates at night in the tail lights of other cars, but can't see much smoke during the day. |

I've noticed mine smoking a lot less too. I wasn't sure if it was because the local fuel stations stopped selling their home-brew "winter blend," or because the truck is breaking in (13,000 miles and counting). The civilian H1 (Alpha) is being discontinued, but the Mil-spec HMMVV (Hummer) will continue production. Actually, the factory that makes the Civilian H1 is being converted to begin production of the Mil-spec HMMVV and Hummer says that no one will lose their jobs. Quote: 1. A real Hummer/Humvee has a diesel engine
Amen brother! |

I agree a real hummer has a diesel. Too bad it's a 6.5. The worst motor they could have chosen. Must have got them real cheap but that doesn't sound like our government! |

I know for 2006 they finally put the 6.6 duramax/allison tranny in the H1. |

Another great point I wanted to make, the GM 6.5L engine is an absolute POS!!! I'll take a 6.2L Diesel ANY day over a 6.5L... I'll take a Duramax over either of those... and I'd take a Cummins over about anything |
