Post subject:  Time to do brakes...
The KJ's pads are starting to squeal, so it looks like it's about time to do the brakes. I'm planning on making this part of the suspension upgrade in the next few weeks since that would be the ideal time to do it, but have a couple of questions.

Part 1: planning on going with the IDparts kits front and rear for both discs & pads. Any alternative recommendations? This one does tow at close to capacity on occasion, so both stopping power & heat dissipation are important.

Part 2: is there anything special that I need to be aware of in terms of replacing the pads & rotors? Is there a specific piston windback tool that I need or can they just be clamped, does the brake fluid need to be pumped via DRB, etc?

I did my brakes with a c-clamp to push the Pistons back, nothing out of the ordinary.

The IDParts kits should be fine even under towing demands. If you're at all concerned about critical stopping power, look into EBC pads and rotors. They offer a full line of pads that are specific for each purpose you may need and they have various rotor options to meet your needs as well. Everything from standard flat faced rotors to cross drilled and slotted for heat dissipation. Their pads come in everything from street racing to heavy duty towing. They typically have great service so giving them a call, if you choose to explore that route, would probably be best.

Thanks for the recommendation, and I'll look into them. The IDParts kits will probably be fine, but I'm open to upgrading beyond that if the cost isn't horrendous to do so.

The previous owner did replace the pads & discs a couple of months before we got the KJ last year, but used the mega el-cheapo ones from the local Autozone. After 15,000 miles the pads are worn; at least the discs haven't warped. I did think about just doing the lifetime warranty on the pads and replacing only them, but I've never been 100% thrilled with the braking capability so figure I'll just replace both and see what the improvement is like.

Normally good metallic brake pads provide the very best stopping power when towing.
A downside is they do give off a little carbon dust especially on the front wheels.

I am running the top of the Duralast Max metallic's from Autozone on the front of both my Jeep, and my 2500 Dodge Cummins which tows over 10k.
Also like the lifetime warranty so I never have to pay for another set again. They cost a little bit more than the cheaper lines, but they are well worth the difference in money.
Some people like ceramics, but I had a bad experience with them a few years back while towing and will never use them again on the front nor can I recommend them. But that is just my opinion. :2cents:

A large "C" clamp will work for a tool to push the caliper pistons back in. :wink:

If you tow and wheel it offroad stay far away from ceramic pads.
