I love my CRD's, but they are approaching 15 years old now and I live in the rust belt. 4 of mine came from the south and have held up well, but one has spent it's whole life on salty roads and is turning into a rust bucket fast.

If you were looking for a brand new vehicle to replace your CRD, what would get today? What SUV style vehicles have the same towing capacity and off road capability? I love diesel, but Ohio just added 20 cents more tax per gallon.......

My wife has a 2015 Grand Cherokee ecodiesel. It is bigger than the Liberty's, but gets better fuel economy.

What others should I look at?

I wouldn't consider anything other than a Toyota Tacoma.
It would actually be a step above a Jeep CRD.
Get the 4-door if you need the extra room.

I am considering a Bollenger B1.

Wow, you have 5 CRDs? I still have my CRD but I also picked up a '18 Colorado ZR2 with the 2.8L Duramax which is a cousin of the 2.8L CRD that you love so much. For towing, the ZR2 models are de-rated to 5,000 lbs. due to the fancy Multimatic off-road suspension, which is the same tow rating as the Liberty CRD (I personally don't use either of them for towing). If you desire more towing capacity, you can get the Z71 model instead, which is still capable off-road and would also costs less. So compared to the Liberty: very similar engine with more refinement and performance (and GDE offers a tune to further increase), same or better towing, more off-road capability, larger and more comfortable passenger space, and a lot more capacity in the rear for your stuff. Despite being larger, the non-ZR2 models actually get significantly better fuel economy than the Liberty CRD as well (mid 30s). With the factory lift, tires, and non-aero front bumper, the ZR2 models gets a reduced fuel economy rating, but in my experience the fuel economy has still been higher than the EPA rating and still better than a Liberty outfitted with a similar lift, tires, and non-aero front bumper. I know a mid-size truck is not an SUV but with a topper and a bed rug you're getting close.

Honestly, I like the looks of the new Jeep Compass. Compact and stylish like the KJ. Its towing capability is probably zero, and off road I'm sure it's no beast, but you could just keep a crd or two around for the tough stuff and have a decent four seasons onroader with the Compass.

The Tacoma and Colorado are awesome, but we have to come up with some way to keep our crds relevant! :jester:

If you like the 2.8 CRD, the Chinese are now making the engine under license & putting it in a 4WD. I think its the engine used in the KK.
In Australia they are known as a LDV. Cheap as, less than 1/2 the price of the competition, if it goes wong, just get another one! Still be cheaper than the competition.
Dont know much about their 4wd ability though.

An idea, ram rebel, should come in diesel also for 2020. Updated EcoDiesel engine (bigger turbo from what I know among others). GDE tuned for sure... Bigger vehicle, more comfort...

Still have my crd in the garage and hope will run for a long time, I'm worried though with electronic parts availability in the future.

This is a very big concern for me as well, some parts have already dried up for these unique vehicles. Two recent ones comes to mind, the front electronic gateway and the mechanical fan bracket hub assembly, but there are many others if you look on some of the Mopar web sites where you will see "NO LONGER AVAILABLE" or "DISCONTINUED".

As more and more essential parts dry up that are a must have to keep the vehicle running and safe to drive, it is going to get harder and harder to keep them on the road if something fails, breaks, or wears out.

I am going to start collecting some of these essential parts just in case.....
But in reality, it may be time to at least start thinking of a suitable replacement for the beloved little diesel.
Or, simply drive it until it can no longer be repaired and sale it for parts. :(

Yes, it's a shame, I agree. I'd like to drive this jeep to an "oldies" show sometimes when I'm retired and have nothing better to do... Sad thing is that some of us got too attached with these finicky unique Jeeps...

I have a Ram Rebel Hemi as a rental in San Antonio right no. Its a quad cab. For some reason it feels huge behind the wheel, and this is coming from a guy with a supercrew long bed F150.

Its also on LT275/70R17 E range duratracs and rides kinda rough because of it. I have had a number of Rams as rentals before and they always rode great. A stock Ram 1500 has usually rode as good or better than my F150 with Bilstein 5100’s, which is a huge improvement over the stock F150 shocks.

I'm holding out to see who is the first to release an opposed piston engine.

I don’t see the attraction of the opposed piston engine.
It’s not a new design. They were used in diesel locomotives over 60 years ago. Then fell out of favor due to their unconventional design.

When I was putting my CRD back together last fall :dead: I picked up a 2011 Durango. Its basically a longer wheelbase version of the Grand Cherokee, so with the 3rd row it can fit the whole family. This one had the HEMI, 2-speed transfer case, and factory skid plates & tow hooks. I put Blizzak snow tires on it and had an absolute blast driving it last winter; its smooth, quiet, and never once had to worry about starting. Its heavy (~5700 lbs), but has lots of power and a 7,200 lb tow rating. It doesn't quite have the off road prowess of the Liberty, but I've been eyeing up one of these lift kits to address that.

We bought a Durango new in 2006 and owned it until 2015. It was a great vehicle, had the 4.7 overhead cam Mercedes engine, plenty of room, three rows of seats, and rode good. Me and the wife still miss our Durango. Only reason we traded it was the evaporator core started leaking and it was going to be over 1k to replace it and the wife wanted something newer. I was working for Nissan at the time and was able to buy a new Nissan at below dealer cost. Bought a new Pathfinder, but it is not the vehicle that Durango was.
There may be a new Durango in our future. :D

2016-2018 WK2 Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel. I'm waiting for these to start coming back in off of the lease market in appreciable numbers so that I can hopefully snag one at a reasonable price.

Past that the Chevy Colorado looks like a possibility, but I'd rather have an enclosed body than a truck (even one with a shell on the back).

I'm with you on both of these. I like the overall look of the Colorado, but I like all my toys within the body rather than a bed with a topper. Also every pickup driver I encounter seems to have had a lobotomy during the purchase process, they all drive like MORONS. Chevy also has more than a few computer issues that I don't like, not the least of which: If you have an accident, they VOLUNTEER to hand over the computer data to your insurance carrier, which logs at least the previous few seconds to unknown minutes of vehicle metrics, and their Onstar system has just about continuous access to that data too - so it could be getting logged all the time.

There's no way in HELL that I'd ever willingly accept that plug-this-in-for-maybe-$30/year-in-savings monitoring devices that the carriers are now advertising heavily... I'm certainly not buying a vehicle that has it hard-coded into the body. That rules out any GM product for me.

I don't know much about the newest Grand Cherokees though, but there is plenty of time to learn about them.
