How much is too much play? Check the shaft today, 0 in/out play and perceptible up/down play. By perceptible I mean I can feel it but would need a gauge to measure it. At what point is a turbo replacement absolutely due? |

Once the compressor wheel contacts the air inlet/compressor housing, it's probably going to need replacing, but it doesn't sound like yours is at that point yet. If the OEM turbo keeps you happy, you can have yours refurbished for far less than a new Garrett turbo. There are cheaper Chinesium ones, but the results are mixed, with short service life, and a comparatively high failure rate. There are upscale rebuilders, such as Blackbird Innovations, that can make it substantially better than new, (remanufactured) for less than new price. With the price versus results (have not heard of a single unhappy customer for Blackbird) there is a 10/10 chance I would go with Joe's work if I needed a turbo for a CRD. I don't know if he does anything else like VW TDIs, but for the CRD it is a no-brainer decision. From what it sounds like though, your turbo is probably OK... That said, are you using a K&N air filter or the regular paper? DO NOT use a K&N on a turbocharged engine, and I wouldn't even suggest them on a regular engine. They just don't filter anything other than big rocks, sticks, squirrels.... And it is the small stuff that causes the most damage. If your turbo has been inhaling dust and debris, the leading edges of the blades will look "shiny" versus the rest... That's a bad thing, b/c it isn't actually making them sharper. Dull compressor wheels pull less air and have more air resistance so they run slower and build a LOT less boost. |
