| Post subject: | High presure fuel pump |
Hello all, My high pressure fuel pump died over the weekend and as I see, its a rather large bill. My shop has quoted me $5000 for that, water pump and timing chain (All are due for replacement 230K miles) This covers parts and labor. I'm asking for a full accounting of all this, but haven't seen that as of yet- My question is: Since I will be having this replaced, is there anything to be aware of when doing this? Things I should watch for? Updates that should be done? Thanks Ken |

Look out for this: you're probably getting *crewed. Every time I have seen or heard of someone replacing the CP3 it was not bad. I restore these jeeps full time and I've never seen one one go bad. You can change the mprop on the back for cheap, but I've never even seen one of those fail. Maybe 1 or 2 lost members have seen the mprop fail. Long story short, the problem isn't likely to be the CP3. Chang the rail solenoid, and then mprop first. But it's even more likely to be a bad wire or burnt pin at the ECU. What are the symptoms? |

Totally agree with Moutainman, CP3 failure is just unheard of! What led you to believe your CP3 has gone bad? Or, are you totally relying on some mechanic's diagnosis? VERY few mechanic's have the experience to properly diagnosis problems with these vehicles. Please tell us what it was doing that led you to this assumption? Any codes, etc? |

If they said timing chain that's another red flag, it's a belt! There's been more than one lost member that has had a CRD handed back to them with a destroyed engine because the mechanic didnt know what they were doing. One of them was a dealership, and he sued the dealer and lost! Be extremely careful who you let touch your jeep. |

We need to know the symptoms and codes. I’ve dealt with almost every possible fuel system problem and never had to replace the pump. |

I agree with other responses and I also have a spare fuel pump removal tool and could probably get the pump off my salvage jeep for reasonable fee but I Really don't believe thats your problem. Even if it is $5000 is pretty steep price for that not knowing exactly how much the pump cost new but unless its around $2500 thats too much in my opinion. |

Basically, getting on the freeway, and it just died. No shudder, no pop nothing....Will turn over but that's it-I am going by the mechanic on what it needs but since this posting I have done my own research and didn't like the prices given so trying to find someone else. This is way over my head to fix so a mechanic is needed In regard to the chain/belt, it was probably what I wrote that was wrong, not what the mechanic said I'm going to see what more I can find out-Its at the mechanics now, but need to pull some codes and have it towed somewhere else Thanks for all the help |

First thing I would do is change the fuel filter. Then crack open a fuel line, crank the motor, and see if any fuel comes out. But the codes will tell you a lot. |

As a shop owner and professional diesel mechanic and owner of 5 kJ crd in the family ... I can tell you I haven’t seen one that’s bad, sounds like you found a mechanic who doesn’t really know diesels! I see it all the time at my shop of the 14 I bought last year and flipped none were what they thought they were one dealership a Chrysler dealership even replaced all four injectors but that one was just a basic rocker job so my advice find somebody who actually knows these things the only real downfall to owning one is you can’t just take it to any shop you have to know someone who knows about them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Doesn’t sound at all like it’s fuel related fuel related issues won’t generally shut the engine down it will cause runnability problems if the engine is not starting it sounds like a bad cam sensor or a broken timing belt that’s where I would start Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It may even be cheaper to ship whole vehicle to a willing knowledgeable member or mechanic and go drive it back (definitely not to me) if no good local mechanics or have mechanic come there. First thing needed is accurate codes and clear and attempt to restart and get codes after that also . Actually first thing like flash said check for fuel flow and change fuel filter and get air out of line after filter change and keep battery charge up while testing also could check timing with pins without disassembly if codes not helpful. Another easy check is the red skim light on instrument cluster on constantly? Probably most diesel mechanics could do whatever is needed if they were willing to take some advise from this forum but not many would especially if it took them a lot of research. BTW you have probably paid at least for the codes to be pulled so you should get this information and post it here for suggestions .unless maybe the mechanic isn't charging you for diagnosis Good Luck |

Don’t clear codes, the stored freeze frame can give info to what happened! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thank you for all the suggestions-It has been a challenge to finding someone reputable to work on this, but I think I have found it-The challenge now is finding a way to get it to the mechanic as towing cna be very expensive. I may end up getting a car dolly of some sort. Has anyone towed and Automatic Jeep before? Anything I should be aware of? Thank you again! Ken |

Ken If using a tow dolly, place the transfer case in neutral, transmission in park, emergency brake off, and you should be ok. Libbys are towed behind RV's all the time, very common. |

Yeah, and give it a little back and forth, maybe hit a few bumps (curb at your driveway), and then double check it, as I've heard of one, and only one where the jeep supposedly dropped into gear and it smoked the transmission. Made me so worried that I pulled the driveline from the 20 or so that I've towed with a dolly. 4 tough bolts, and a few thick zip ties to attach the rear of the driveline to the brake lines. Then reinstall with blue locktite... |

Sooooo, what it ended up being is a blown fuse. Why it blew in the first place is still a mystery. There were a number of codes one being the temp thermostat so that was replaced. Once I pick the jeep up and can go over everything with the shop(Currently, the Jeep is 100 miles away)I will have better clarity. I can't tell how much I appreciate the helpful comments on this. When I was told $5K I was wondering just what I was going to do, but something just didn't sound right and after reading all of your comments, it made me look elsewhere Thank you, thank you thank you! P.S We have good beer here in Portland so if any of you are around, I will certainly buy you one, two or three!! Ken |

Very Important, now, we have got to know which fuse it was for future reference.

Glad he found the problem and it turned out to be something simple. But the worst part of this story is that a so called shop misdiagnosed it and told him he needed a CP3 replacement, unbelievable. There are some real idiots out there calling themselves mechanics so be real careful who you let touch your vehicle!

If you need someone who has the skills and tools I am 4 hours away in the tri cities, you can always bring it here. That said check the harness under the hood, I have seen one rub through by the alternator and pop a fuse and do something similar. Now you need to find why the fuse blew, fuses are rated at twice the load of the circuit so something causes it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
