I know this is a very old thread but I recently experienced this problem with my 2005 Liberty CRD with 320,000km's on it. Started suddenly while on the highway with the cruise on at 100kph. Engine light came on, a look in the mirror revealed clouds of back smoke. Disabled cruise and realized that I only had just enough power to keep the vehicle at 90kph. Vehicle idled just fine; no smoke, sounded good. The initial normal pull away from stop was pretty normal but further depressing of the accelerator peddle only produced smoke and very little more power. Code reported was turbo under boost
The problem turned out to be a blown turbo hose. The one between the intake and the after cooler. It was blown on the bottom side up near the engine intake and was not visible from topside. I spent several hours trying to sort this one out and won't bother with the details.
The rational for the fault producing loads of black smoke is that as the turbo was running without obstruction, the air box was gobbling huge amounts of air. The mass airflow sensor would have seen this huge airflow and the ECM would naturally respond with opening up the injector pulse width in a attempt to make some reasonable air fuel ratio.
Amazon had the hoses. About $125US for both.
