Post subject:  2006 CRD?

I am looking at a 2006 CRD with 122k miles. Its difficult to find them much less with low miles. I live in a region without emissions inspection. Would it be a more reliable vehicle if I removed some of the smog control bits, like the EGR? Are there other reliability concerns outside the engine?

I used to have a 2005 (signature) but its been gone for several years and I have dropped out of the know :)

Thanks!

Start by reading through this,

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=54207

if you haven't already. There are a number of issues that the owner of a new-to-them CRD should be concerned about. There are a number of vehicles that have had dropped valve issues, rocker wear and failure issues and head gasket issues. If there are no records of any of this type of work being done, or furthermore any timing belt work being done, then plan on buying the kit and parts from IDParts or similar and having the job completed shortly after your purchase. The investment is sizeable, but the vehicles are generally considered very reliable after the work is done. There are a few CRD's here floating around the 300k mark on the odometer. I'm not sure if anyone has actually broken that mark yet.

I would suggest getting absolutely as much information as the dealer and/or previous owner is able to provide so you know where you stand from the start. Use that info, and the info on what essential modifications have NOT been done to make your decision.

This is super helpful, thank you so much! I am sure details will be light as this is at a car dealer not an individual.

Unplugging the MAF instantly stops the EGR from functioning, but you will get a CEL, but no problems from it. Are you sure it does not have a GDE tune in it already? That would mean no EGR.

Not sure, haven’t been to see it yet.

The dealer will likely not know if it has a GDE tune. If they did know they might not sell without factory reflash. Of course that would depend on whether its a Chrysler dealer or not.

When you start it up you can tell if it has a GDE tine because the RPM s will initially rise to I think about 1000 rpm for several seconds then slow to about 700.

There are several other things to look for one of which would be to make sure the check engine light (CEL) functions someone may have disabled it. I bought one that had a disabled CEL that I knew about. You can check it by performing the instrument cluster check and all gauges lights will come on then off and cycle through all its displays even raving up rpm guage and temp guage etc. Unplugging the MAF sensory on the airbag should cause the CEL to come on also unless it has GDE tune.

I would want to see any check engine codes that may be present or stored also. It would also be beneficial to see if the mass air flow is acceptable that could indicate excessive rocker wear .

Make sure and test drive it for all the normal things like brakes and ball joints 4 wd function etc. When you do make sure the temp guage goes up to just to left of the 12 o clock position if it doesn't the thermostat needs replacing and mileage will suffer.

Like already said plan on doing Timing Belt work unless it can be proved it has been done.

Another special thing to check on is whether or not all electric windows actually roll up and down . Sometimes the mechanism breaks and they fix it to be permanently up. This can be fixed reasonably yourself but Dealer would charge over $400 and replace glass and mechanism.

I had my son go purchase one for me when he was away at school out of state and I made up a whole list of things for him to check and report to me but I don't know where it wen to or I would post it here.

You also need to make sure it has a good battery of correct capacity.

Remember anything you find can be used to negotiate price . They may be hard to find with low miles but not unheard of. The price even in good condition and those miles is likely very negotiable. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $7000 for any CRD if perfect condition especially from a dealer. I would also push for at least a 30 day guarantee of some type. I paid $8000 at a private dealer for a limited with 93,000 miles in 2016. (The one my son picked up).

That sounds like a good reason not to question the seller if it does have a tune, consider it a huge bonus if you find out it does after the purchase.

Agreed. There is nothing to gain from them knowing it has one and everything to lose. Look for advanced idle as mentioned above but say nothing about it if it appears to have one. You can also have the BIN checked after you buy it to see if it has been altered or "DIY Tuned" by the PO.

The idle surge at start up for gde is 1700 I think. Factory is about 1000

Dealer said it had the timing belt and the water pump replaced and has the receipt! Good news!

That is good news but if rockers worn have to do all the same work to do them. Generally rockers get to 150,000 plus with somewhat on schedule oil changes as long as its diesel rated oil.

Agree just keep the tune to yourself.

They could use this to ask higher price but hey it was due at 7 years or 100,000

Forgot to mention one thing, Of course a blown head gasket is the other major problem the CRD s have and it can run normally and appear ok with just a small leak. Kinda hard to fully evaluate but ask them not to run the engine before you go look and do the start cold check for air in coolant tank test after running about 60 seconds. The coolant bottle may be discolored especially if the overflow section on right is discolored. I guess it would be going a bit far to do a coolant pressure test unless they will let you drive for a day or two at home.

See if they know if it has the old ceramic glowplugs worth a $100 or more in negotiation (parts alone) but probably$300 to $400 to pay to get them changed.

Forgot to add try to make the torque converter slip . Get it up to about 65 in overdrive which will be about 1900 rpm then slow back down to about 1750 rpm which will be about 60 then try to hold this going up a fairly steep hill if it slips use this to negotiate price. I usually set the cruise and let it apply the fuel to do this. If they would let you tow something about 3,000 lbs would be great to bring this out.

This is a good thread, but I most confess I am feeling a little overwhelmed. I will probably put my dreams of having another CRD on ice unless I come across an especially cheap one, or one already sorted out.

Sadly you missed out on the Sasquatch EGR replacement kits. I have them on both of my CRD's. Whatever you do, at least get a Provent. Sasquatch sells them. The provent keeps that recycled crap out of your intake system.

Sadly yes. Who knows if they ever get back to tuning kj's. The jeeps I sell are "all sorted out", but the price reflects the huge amount of labor I invested. $8k gets you a solid jeep with 106k miles.
They tend to go for about $2k less back east, but they are usually rusty. Nothing like the dry arid west for buying used cars
