Post subject:  Custom Intake Snorkel Designs

I want to design/fab/install a snorkel intake for my 3" turbo-feed implementation.
I want to integrate an [accumulator] Airbox/Filter/MAF-tap in-line, and free-up the stock airbox area for locating a 2nd battery.
Within circus boundaries, I am not skittish about changing the aesthetics to suit purpose and function.

I'm not crazy about the options currently on the market.
$600-up, they look pretty but I'm not convinced that they are great for (brief) deep-fording. And they don't liberate the stock airbox area.
Further, I prefer a design that favors passage through the hood vs the right quarter-panel.

From the standpoint of air intake and visibility, obviously it's best to locate the snorkel vehicle-right. The snorkels that trace the right A-pillar make sense, but I'm also considering the option of designing one that just pops-up through the hood. Either:
- As near the right-rear corner of the hood as possible, or;
- In the zone above the turbo, maybe with a ram-air intake imitating the bell-vent on a ship (yee-ha!).

A "localized" ram could also be designed to temporarily install a "taller" air stack as may be necessary in certain situations. Normally, it would simply protrude a bit above the hoodline mid-right while posing minimal obstruction to visibility.

Anyway, you guys are always full of great original ideas so please jump-in; the water is... wet.

This is just for my rig, no multiples planned. Gotta' fab something asap.

Thanks!

My only thought so far is that the GDE tune eliminates the need of the MAF sensor, which may make your project simpler, and I really like the fact that its one less thing to fail!

Good counsel. Thanks!

Re GDE-flashes or other "vendor" flashes, obviously there are now mammoth hurdles to acquisition. After I finish my (nightmare) system mods I had planned to cull-through the himalayan flash-thread to guide self-flashes for economy, towing and possibly racing (Baja). Towards that goal, I long-ago procurred an XP-laptop, flash-cable and utility for the purpose of flashing-on-the-fly.
That was my issue even before the gov clamped-down on commercial flash-vendors: I wasn't enthusiastic to drop >$400/flash for a fixed, single-priority vehicle use.

I haven't visited the main flash-thread in over a year: Has it been sanitized due to legal paranoia, or are all the old (free) share-ware detailed specs still accessible?

I believe it is still there . The provider is not in the USA. I believe he is in Italy.

The DIY Flash thread is still alive and well right now, but who knows what the future holds with all this EPA crap.

If you know what version software you have and your thinking about reflashing sometime in the future, it might not be a bad idea to go ahead and download yourself a copy of some of the relevant DIY Flash Files.

Marco Giacomelli aka "Yeti" is located in Northern Italy and he can perform custom tunes or modifications to your existing file.
You can contact him on this forum using the PM or email features.

Any NO tune no matter who does it can totally eliminate the EGR and prevent it from some function or leakby.
The only way to 100% guarantee no EGR function is to block it off with a block off plate or totally remove all the crap by installing one of the elbow kits still available on eBay.
If you total remove all the EGR crap; EGR valve, FCV, EGR cooler and all associated lines & hoses, you will need to reflash your ECM to get rid of the DTC light using one of the free tunes available on the above link.

SasQ I&II delete were my first mods 5 years ago, and I've survived fine with the egr code without doing the adios-flash. The plan is to add that e-delete to the other 3 performance flashes... IF I ever get this donkey-pile of mods I (stupidly) saddled-up to bray.

I've been wrenching for over 40 years and I've never been this abused by so many stupid little problems.

Example: Yesterday, I was wrapping the install of a pioneer media head. After installing 2 amps, 8-speaks and a rear-cam, the FINAL procedure was to install the fascia-plate around the head. I barely grazed its p.o.s. plastic %#@& front knob with the fascia, and it pops-off. With the interior still removed for deep-cleaning, it still took me an hour to realize that it had managed to ping-pong into the abyss within the tcase lever housing!
Image
Another hour and a dab of caulk on the end of 1/4" socket extensions to coax it out only to discover that the knob's mounting tab had cracked. Replacement? 37 @%#& US Dollars and 3-weeks! $37 bux for a small plastic knob! Grrrr...
I suppose the "upside" is that it was JUST the knob and not the head's spindle but I'm not feelin' it.

Seriously, endless infuriation. I must have pissed somebody off in another dimension...

After 10 months, start-up is still ahead. Optimistic?
:ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :grim:

Moral: Be Smart; enjoy your VALUABLE TIME going on excellent adventures in your STOCK jeep.
