Post subject:  Traction control light jeep stalling

Hi All,
It seems like i am having more issues with this jeep than my old problematic Ford 6 liter lol. Anyway, I was away for a week and left my jeep at the airport, after coming back, it started and drove no problem. about 5 minutes of driving the jeep started to sputter and sound like it was going to stall, this happened 6 or 7 times and whenever it did, the Traction control light would blink. Eventually it stopped sputtering but when it did, all three ESP,ABS, and Traction lights came on the dash. They have been on ever since, there are no issues with driving but wonder what would cause this? I have replaced both front hub assemblies last summer as well as all 4 abs sensors.
Thanks in advance.

Having these lights on will not affect how the jeep runs if it is actually caused by a bad sensor etc. However, the same thing that caused the sputtering could possibly cause the lights to be on namely a short most likely going to a speed sensor and if it was bad enough intermittently to lower the voltage the ecu will do strange things.

The circumstances bring to mine maybe a mouse or squirrel damaging some wiring and possibly a sharp turn or bounce either completing a transection or changing position of the shorting wire. If it was cold perhaps the vermin even rode to the airport with you !

Based on what you describe, sounds like you have an electrical issue.
06's have a known issue of wiring harness chaffing right behind the fuel filter head assembly where it is bolted to the firewall.
Maybe worth checking in that area for any damaged or chafed wiring.

Always check all fuses first!

The "Clock Spring Cable" which is the cable coming down from the steering wheel boss to the electronic modules can fail....I have replaced mine on my Export 2002 CRD due to ABS light!

I also had a problem with the cable coming down from the steering hub having a bad connection where it joined the main harness. Most connectors dealing with the Airbag signals have a small flat metal plate inside it which instantly shorts out the connector pins on the Airbag Side so as to prevent the airbags being activated due to back EMF. I had to cut off the connector and bypass it as the connector was bad.

In my case though I have a basic Sport...no Cruise Control, Radio Control and most important no Traction Control so only the ABS light work come on.

The 2006 CRD gets its Steering Angle Data for the ESP from the steering wheel.
I have seen posts of a failed clock spring causing ESP errors.
The cable cannot really be tested as it has several copper strips carrying the signals and these can develop hair cracks so the failure occurs only when the steering wheel is in a certain position!

If you do decide to replace the Clock Spring do the following:

Disconnect battery and tie the Red battery lead to chassis/engine for a half hour to discharge any capacitance in the system.....you do not want the Airbags to go off while you are working in that area!

Remove plastic covers from the top of steering column and unplug all the switches and airbags.
Undo the bolt on the steering wheel....13mm I think.

Mark the exact position of the wheel to the splined shaft with a punch so you can get the wheel back in its original place. You will need a small two-jaw puller to pull the wheel off...protect the exposed thread on the steering column with a large bolt when you fit the pulley in place.

The new Clock Spring comes with a white plastic shipping pin to keep the spring in its correct position...leave this in place and remove it only when the steering wheel is about to be re-fitted!
