| Post subject: | Greatest % BD to petrodiesel a CRD can take? |
Greetings, Looking at buying a CRD, but most interested in making my own BD for it. Have seen a lot of conflicting stories regarding it. Jeep, I think, maintains one can only use B5, and if pushed, B20, but the biodiesel sights say "any" diesel can run on B100 if its clean, dry, etc. It seems in the short term, people haven't experienced any problems. The long term is the issue though isn't it? Are there any techies out there that would know the worst case scenario for running B100 in a CRD? It wouldn't ruin the whole engine like I've heard from Jeep would it? Just injector pump? Any wisdom would be appreciated. |

There are quite a few folks that run B100 in their CRD's. here is a recent thread: www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=9102 |

Information from internet discussion forums is to be used at your own risk. rhljeep wrote: Are there any techies out there that would know the worst case scenario for running B100 in a CRD? It wouldn't ruin the whole engine like I've heard from Jeep would it?
Jeep has never said it would ruin the whole engine. Only that it may void your warranty. Which, by the way, is true of ANY fuel. The warranty specifically states that "intentional or unintentional misfueling" voids your warranty. That is it. You may have had a dealership or service personnel give you a knee jerk reaction saying "biodiesel will ruin your engine" but that is not anything official... Having said that - if you run anything more than 5% and you DO happen to have any fuel related issues - expect to either pay for it yourself or have an extended battle with DC to get repairs. The best model of operation is silence when at the dealership. They don't NEED to know you use biodiesel... Now as for what can go wrong? I have no clue. I would imagine there could be injector or injector pump liabilities. But that would be about the extent of the risk I would imagine. Someone else may know better here... Having said that - people have been crying wolf for years that biodiesel would destroy a VW TDI - while I personally have more than 60k miles on a VW TDI using B20 or higher, and have met people with over 100k using B20 or higher. I don't guarantee there *wont* be problems - just that I think the FUD is spread by the oil companies who are scared of a renewable domestic clean fuel source.... However - there exists the VERY REAL possibility that you can get BAD biodiesel. Bad biodiesel - just like bad regular diesel - can harm your engine. Make sure that the quality of biodiesel you use in the CRD is GOOD. This is an electronic engine under high pressure. Not as much room for error as an old Mercades (which will run off of just about anything that will burn...) But biodiesel use is here to stay. Many states are even passing laws stating so - so the support from manufacturers is only getting better. Not worse... |

What Valkraider said. Seriously, the short answer is "nobody will know for sure for at least a decade." That said, DC says they are fine with 5%, above that, shut up when you visit the dealer. So far even those folks running B100 (as far as I know) have reported no problems with injectors or fuel pump, which is where the problems should happen if they are going to happen. We've all seen a flock of bad EGRs, some bad trannies, etc. regardless of the fuel run. If you are willing to risk $3,000 or so in the gamble on your injectors and pump, you'll be joining good company. Oh, one poster has remarked on hard starting with B100, but so far I've not heard of that one from other folks. |

Based on research and the # of VWs, and pickups I meet at Western States Petroleum, I'm gambling that the auto manufacturers are probably in bed with the oil industry. I do use a biocide as any water in the fuel will grow algae which in turn will clog the fuel filter and, I understand create a big, expensive mess. My CRD runs like a top on B-100 and any % mixed with Dino diesel. I think I'm lucky to have a good fuel supplier and clean fuel. If I lived in a colder climate, I'd probably mix it with the seasons as noted by Valkraider in a previous thread. Here's another thread. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... php?t=8504 |

Thank you all for the info. I'm glad I found this forum, and may be encouraged to to go for the purchase. Would I be incorrect to gather from your replies that most of you buy BD more than making it yourselves? Along the same line, what are your opinions of the Diesel Secret Energy product and system? I've heard mostly negative reviews from BD websites, but most of them from people who haven't tried the product, or who have and found the filtration sytem they recommend more expensive than they claim (by $150), or that it's cheap construction, but whose vehicles seem to be running fine on it. Kind Regards |

I'm running B99 purchased from a local source that meets/exceeds ASTM standards and will back its fuel quality- they are selling it as neat fuel and are willing to deal with bad fuel problems if their blend caused it. That said, who knows what bioD will do to my engine in the long term? I'm betting it will keep it running longer, but may burn out my starter a bit sooner (harder to start in cool weather) and wear down the battery, but that's about it. Might have to have fuel injectors cleaned someday, but coking on the injectors mainly happens with WVO, not bio... Long story short, there's a lot of us running B99 and not really fretting about it. Liberty runs great on the stuff, but you can always mix it back down with dinoD. I would be leery of using my own bioD in a new car unless I was a chemist and had testing facilities to make sure my bioD was up to snuff.... But that's just me. |

Diesel secret is a fraud, snake-oil, bunk, junk science, and any term you can come up with for something that is a load of horse pucky... That was as nice as I can be. |
