Exhaust Leak ?

My 2006 Liberty CRD smokes from the engine compartment. FYI, I bought it used 18 months ago.

I originally thought it was an oil leak dripping on the exhaust manifold. No. All checked, all seals replaced, all good.

It has to be turbo related. It's fairly constant, But much worse after a downshift then a stop within 60 seconds. Turbo on, turbo off, in rapid sucession.

I can't find anything in the Service Manual or the Parts Diagram to explain it.

I'm thinking it's a bad seal or gasket somewhere. My local CDJR shop is worse than hopeless.

Any ideas?

Do you have a ProVent CCV filter installed?
If not, it could be due to accumulated oil built up in the CAC (charge air cooler aka intercooler) that is getting sucked into the engine.

Sluggish turbo vane operation could also cause low boost issues when first accelerating which would cause excessive smoke.
A bad Turbocharger Vacuum Modulator, Vacuum Solenoid, leaking Vacuum Reservoir, collapsed or leaking tubing from modulator valve to turbo vane control diaphragm any one of these could also cause low or sluggish boost issues....
A boost gauge would be a big help in determining if it is a boost/turbo performance issue.

It looks to me like you’re describing a smoke from the back problems not the front like he’s experiencing. I think you’re in the right track with things you’re looking at, but special attention to that PCV puck on top. One method is to get a soap sprayer and liberally hose it down while running and look for bubbles.
