Hello, long story short...I need a ECM in my 2005 CRD.
Mopar/dealers and even Bosch said its too old and zero stock anywhere!
I found A1 Cardone offers a rebuild service but will take 2 + weeks. Part # 79-4952V
2005 and 2006 are NOT compatible.
My 2005 ECM numbers are: the original 56044558CB supersedes to 56044562CC
Bosch: 0281011473
And can anyone confirm 100% that a used ECM programmed to a different VIN can indeed be reflashed to another VIN.
Thank you!

Yes, a 2005 ECU can only be replaced with another from a 2005 CRD.

The VIN can be reprogrammed into the ECU but you will need the Chrysler DRB tool to do it.
The ID’s from the SKIM and ignition key also need to be programmed into it.

A dealership should be able to do this if you can get yours towed to one.
Or maybe you can find someone on this forum who can do it.
If you ship your ECM to someone they will also need the SKIM, the key, and the programming code for the key.
You can get the code from a dealership parts department if you provide them proof of ownership.

And yes, I’ve been through this before.

I got a mobile auto diagnostic / programmer to come to me... The used ECM took the VIN and SKIM but the DRB3 now shows two DTCs: 1 - Serial Link External Failure 2 - PCM Status Failure.
The fella says I gotta try another used ECM.
Any other thoughts to this??

Sounds like it might be the gateway module.
It’s located on the frame rail, below the battery, next to the AC compressor.
Check for corrosion and loose or damaged wires.

It looks good in there - already went in that area, and I've taken care of that major ground too by the power steering cooler loop by the head light.

These key words: Serial Link External Failure

Kinda indicate a problem with the gateway module.
But I’m not the expert in that area.

So keep checking fuses and wires.

Found another part of the puzzle, I took apart the original ECM and its got a big burnt spot on the board. The fella working with me now tells me he might have touched the positive cable yet I can't see any burnt / arching spot externally. I'll double check all the fuses.
I really appreciate your input and will report back - thank you!

Avoid 'rebuilt' ECMs. They're often sent out cleaned up and untested, so are as much of a gamble as a used one from eBay, etc.

Look for broken wires. They're really common on CRDs at this point, and could be causing the symptoms you're describing.

I went through this last year. What was believed to be a fried ECM turned out to be a number of wires underhood that had lost their insulation and were rubbing on conductive things. Ended up returning an ECM and an FCM to the sellers as a result.

Also, if the guy you're working with 'thinks' that he 'might' have touched the positive cable (and I'm not even entirely certain what exactly that's meant to describe in this case, but shorting electronics to earth is generally a bad idea) you may want to find someone else to work with.

I'll check it out and report back, thanks.

Wiring looks good, connections.
Got another ECM...( all numbers are correct )
Using the DRBIII the VIN is correct, PIN went in okay.
Cycle the key - darn security light turns off, then back on - STAYS ON, sill no start.
Same fault codes...and no start.
1 - Serial Link External Failure
2 - PCM Status Failure.
Any other ideas, was mentioned "gateway module".
I called the dealer - loooong gone NA. FWIW I have a used one coming too.
Still stuck :(

Few more things..original ECM and its burnt spot on the board is pin 2,4 and 6.. The main grounds.

I'm on my 2ed replacement ECM, my only code I have is the dreaded P2294 Fuel pressure regulator 2 control circuit open. Tested continuity from end to end, no fault found, like no resistance.

Cranks but no start.

Tested continuity or tested resistance?
no resistance = no continuity = open circuit

I had a bad fuel rail pressure solenoid.
The solenoid itself had a intermittent open circuit.
Passed all resistance and continuity tests.

The individual wiring tested at 0.4 ohms.
The fuel pressure regulator tested at 1.4 ohms. ( For what its worth I was able to find a 2006 CRD and cross check - both identical readings.
Is there anything else that could set a P2294? If you clear it, give a crank, no start, its back immediately. Thanks again for the input!

Also found some good tests here:

http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/J ... Diesel.pdf

While doing the Fuel pressure solenoid tests, starting on page 246, and on page 249 it tells you to jump the FPS to cause a short detection - I have none on the DRBIII and it states to replace the ECM.

So as of now - I think - I have 2 ECMs, 1 used 1 reman with the same failure!

First, lets make sure we are talking about the same solenoid.

Its the one at the back of the fuel rail, correct.

If I understand the test correctly, you jumper the two pins that would connect to the solenoid and that should create a short and set an appropriate code.
But that doesn't necessarily mean a bad ECM.
That could also mean a open circuit.

I've dealt with plenty of connectors on this engine that created intermittent opens.
Made diagnosis very difficult.

Yes that's the one, at the very rear of the rail facing the firewall.
The test from Chrysler says if you jump it, it should create a short and set an appropriate code P2296 Fuel Pressure Solenoid Short Circuit - if not to replace the ECM , stated on page 249.
It should't be an open circuit as it passes all the ohms testing.

Like I said.
Intermittent.

It’ll pass a test until you wiggle the wires or put a load on it.

Post subject:  Re: I need a ECM in my 2005 CRD- HELP

Here’s another test to try.
You might need someone to help you with this.
Disconnect the fuel return line from the fuel rail.
The hose is usually a light blue color.
Have someone crank the engine while you watch the return port on the rail.
There should be no fuel coming out of that port.
(However there will be fuel coming out of the hose you disconnected because it’s the same return as from the injection pump and injectors. So if you can, plug the hose)

If there is fuel coming out of the return port, then the solenoid isn’t holding pressure like it’s supposed to.
Which indicates a bad fuel rail pressure solenoid OR the solenoid isn’t getting any voltage.

And if you haven’t done so already, clear the codes.

This is what I got now.....
I have high resistance on the ECM 3 power connections to ground!
I removed the plug cover on the ECM harness to examine the wires - no faults found.
Tested from the ASD relay port that powers up the ECM.
Somewhere...I'm thinking I have a short/partial short in the harness. But where...
For the record yes the relay was swapped with known good.

The resistance is what?
Tens, hundreds, thousands,...?
