My take:
1. Buying the diesel for 6k more is just an ego massage

If I was towing with my gladiator, I would without a doubt spec this engine over the pentastar. It only down 25hp and up 200 ft-lbs of torque. However, while I think the EcoDiesel would tow well with 260hp, I would be extremely afraid of how hot it gets. They had trouble keeping them cool in the Ram 1500 with far more frontal area.

Try towing a travel trailer into a 30mph headwind in Wyoming on a 100°F day on a road with an 80 mph speed limit with this thing. That engine will be smoking hot and doubt it could stay anywhere close to the flow of traffic.

At the end of the day though, I probably wouldn't buy a Gladiator to tow with.

That won't fix the problems with it having a poor breakover angle, a bed that only the Subaru Baja would be jealous of, and a ridiculously high price tag. Oh, and being way too long for decent trail manoeuvrability.

Right idea, wrong execution. But they'll sell a million, no doubt about it.
