Post subject:  Flowmaster 50 report

Well I know everyone's talking about the 40, but when I stopped at my trusty garage today with money to burn they convinced me to go with the 50 instead, saying it will be much more quiet but better flow than stock.

So I ended up putting it (a 2.5" one) and just came back home (less than 5miles drive). I'd like to see if other ones have installed it before giving a full report, but for the little 20min drive I can't say I've noticed much difference, only maybe MORE restriction than I was expecting :-( It was quiet for sure 'though, kinda smooth tone

It may be 1) me and my high expectation 2) too few miles to tell 3) maybe there's a computerized thing and I need to unplug the battery and let it learn?

Anyway I will report back here after 100miles or so, but in the meantime please provide your feedback!

Could be my heavy BioDiesel usage but I didn't notice any mileage gain. that was the main reason I did it.

I put a Glasspack on, absolutely no imptovement in diesel mileage. I am seeing very little power improvements though. Especially when I go 55 and shift dowm to pass people I have more power. Only paid 50$ and the main reason I got it was for lower EGTs when I get the SP Diesel Module.

I put a 50 on some time ago, 3 weeks ago I drove from Vegas to LA and got 27-28 mpg at highway speeds. I have more engine than exhaust noise now with the 50 on.

Post subject:  Final report

I had the 50 for 10 days, and i removed it!

Why? Of course i like the mellow, tone-down sound, but it basically put too much restriction on the exhaust. I noticed the turbo spool was slow. The torque build-up was coming later, very easy to notice. In fact I wasn't able to spin the rear wheels at a stoplight, which i could do with the stock muffler. Of course you're mileage could vary, and once on its way it was a very quiet drive. Would recommend it for those who put priority on quietness and smoothness over torque.

I therefore went back to my shop and had them install a 40 (free swap, but i had to pay their time...).
WOW! back to the fat torque curve, in fact I left the shop with a little spin which put a grin on my face for 5 miles at least
The turbo spool faster than with the 50 or the stock, and the sound is really not annoying at all, it actually fits the diesel very well!

Hope this helps anyone wondering about the flowmaster 40... basically a good improvement for our CRD

Tried to tell you the 40 was best for the CRD of the Flowmasters for power and being quite. Ours has over 10,000 miles on the 40 muffler and it still sounds and flows like new.

The Delta 50 "SUV" is the one you want...it is thicker and deadens the drone down...quieter than the 40 in the cabin...also a little tuffer off-road

I have no drone and it is as quite in the cabin as OEM muffler.

I was still thinking of my 2002 3.7L with the 50 series...put it on there because it was better against off-road damage. Mounted it as far back near the rear axle as possible...never got hit again.

With the turbo, something with no restriction would be better. I would even think a muffler without chambers, like the Flowmasters have, would be better...Maybe a Borla or Dynomax for turbo spool up

The Flowmaster 40 series has no chambers, just a series of wedges in the muffler that the exhaust flows around and then out the tail pipe. I still wish I had done a straight through glass pack muffler for even greater flow, but the possibility of the drone and wife complaining nixed that idea.

I thought the changing of the muffler was more to reduce turbo lag and lower EGTs, not for mileage?

It does all three, because the easier and faster the turbo spools helps mileage as does the reduction in exhaust restriction, lower EGT is also a a benifit.

Old Navy,
Did you put the Flowmaster in the same spot as original or more towards the rear as other LOST have suggested?

Put it where the OEM was and have about same noise level as stock, but just less back pressure. If it had been my vehicle instead of the wife's I would have gone with a straight through glass pack muffler.

I had the 40 installed back in January. It was installed in the OEM position. I noticed a little (very little) more mellow exhaust tone, but no noticeable increase in performance or mileage.

Post subject:  exhaust kit?

Didn't I see a link on here about a bolt on free flow cat back system? I remember looking at the site to buy it, replaced the exhaust system from the flange back using all the oem hangers and stuff with out torching the stock system up. Seems like it sold for around $250??? I am really missing the sound of my Cummins with the 4" BD exhaust......:(:(.

Only one I saw mentioned like that 2 to 3 times the amount you mentioned.

Just my 2 cents... I bought the MagnaFlow cat-back system #15870. It is a free-flowing straight-thru design using a perferated tube in a packed stainless muffler. You can see right through the muffler end to end and it is an exact fit. The system is designed for the 3.7L but fits exactly on the CRD. In fact, I think it fits better than the factory system because it gives slightly more clearance but the fuel tank. It runs all 2 1/2" mandrel-bent stainless and looks great. I noticed faster spooling and better/flatter tourque while pulling my 14' Triton enclosed trailer at about 3,500lbs. Milage is slightly improved and it is just as quiet inside the cab as the stock muffler, only slightly louder outside. The polished stainless tip also looks pretty nice, although it does change the look to a little less utilitarian. Just my 2 cents...
