I have an 2005 CRD. Was having fuel issues with white exhaust smoke, so upon reading up in the forums, I thought it might be the fuel rail pressure regulator, so I replaced it. Stopped the exhaust smoke but the engine then began simply shutting off (not stalling) with any quick pressure or hill climb. Threw into neutral, turned ignition off, restart- then drives fine until it happens again. I next replaced the fuel rail pressure sensor, to no avail. Heard potential that it might be an 'air in the fuel' problem, so I replaced the fuel filter head- new type and rewired. Definitely made a difference, but it still cuts out when engine is under any stress or pressure. Any ideas for what I should try next? :banghead:

If you suspect air in fuel issues, best to install an intank fuel lift pump like so many of us have done. Cures air in fuel issues forever. Instead of air being sucked in, any leaks will leak fuel so you can easily find them. Pump sets in fuel so it puts everything under 12-14 psig pressure from inside the fuel tank to all the way to the back of the CP3 injection pump.
or
At a minimum add a low pressure inline fuel pump but make darn sure you have NO leaks on the suction side of the pump or it can still suck air into the fuel system.

Thanks WWD- definitely considering that, but as I give my experience more thought- the cut out is very instantaneous. No limp mode or sputtering. Could it be an electrical issue? Any thought on where I might look first?

Have you scanned it, any codes?
That could help point to location or sensor causing the issue.

Pulled these codes before the filter housing up grade
p0610 control module options error
p1186 inlet pressure sensor ckt (was changed out before)
p0093 fuel system large leak
p0299 turbocharger underboost

I would clear the codes, drive it and see if it sets any new codes.

I had the same issue but would only happen when the tank got to 1/4 of a tank of fuel....replaced the in tank fuel pump and all is now sweet
