Well I finally did it. I got 500.6 miles on one tankfull of diesel. In was a on dino fuel. Trip from southern VA to Baltimore this week end. Stopped and fueled up and put 20.653 gal in tank.

I did 619 on one tank before filling on the way back from MI, but I was carrying 4 jerry cans with 3 gal each in them and never above 70 mph. I had just had the warning light come on for fuel, I would have only gone about 525 to 550 miles had I not had the extra fuel in back end of Jeep. I also have 40 psi in the tires and that can give as much as 10% increase of mpg's over 32 PSI so I have been told and read.

Our fuel warning light comes on with about 1.5 gal left in tank, and that's not much of a warning when on the road.

The closest I've gotten is 491 miles, any farther and I would have passed the last fuel stop/chance available. My low fuel light had been on for 10 miles already, so I was itchin for some diesel

Ironically, my worst mileage ever was also on an all freeway trip. 16.5mpg but I was basically driving through a hurricane at 75mph for 8 hours straight!

We know you do JJ...;-)

Can't wait to break mine in and do the Amsoil conversion. Used to road race for Mazda and the Amsoil Oil tested much better than any ohter synthetic we tried (the long grain series 2000 when it first came out). It lowered oil temps by over 25degrees with no other changes.

If you get some loose rings in your 3.7L gas engine and some oil starts squeezing by the rings...we will let you slide and call you an oil burner like the rest of us :p

Back about 13 years ago, when I first started getting involved with electric vehicles, I got a chance to talk with one of the main Goodyear guys about low rolling resistance tires.

The main thing he said to look at? The weight of the vehicle and the combined weight rating of all 4 tires. Take the weight rating of one tire and multiply by 4, then compare this to the weight of the vehicle.

If your vehicle weight is 60% or less of the combined load rating of your tires, then you'll get the max benefit from a tire designed for low rolling resistance. The higher you are above the 60% point, then it doesn't matter how good the tire is designed, you'll still get poor fuel mileage.

Another thing to look at is sidewall height. Everything else being equal, the tire with the shorter sidewall will have less sidewall flex, therefore less rolling resistance and better fuel economy. Tall and narrow isn't always the best choice for MPG.

At Sam's Club back on Sunday, I found they carried LT225/75R16 tires by BF Goodrich and Goodyear, in Load Ranges D and E. Load Range D was rated for 2335 lbs at 60 psi, Load Range E was rated for 2680 lbs at 80 psi.

Load range E on a CRD? Those have got to be brutal. Even 38 PSI makes me wonder why I bought this thing.

Not sure how many diesels you have owned. Just a friendly word of advise, don't run one low on fuel. Besides being a PITA to reprime, can trash an injector pump or injectors for lack of cooling and lubrication.

Congrats! seems like you reached the Holy Grail of CRD owners :)
Now about the mile-high club, er, never mind

What were the conditions? wind, temperature, speed?

Not that I doubt you about getting 500+ miles on a tank, but the KJ CRD only has a 20.5 gallon tank...

Whats up with the 20.653 fill-up? :?

I average about 26 MPG. The air pressure in the tires makes a big difference. I have settled for 40psi cold in the stock tires.

It's called a "filler neck". I fill mine all the way up. If it ain't dripping diesel, I'm not happy. ;D

ditto on the dripping diesel, also fill until there isn't any foam (let the foam settle out)

I think the real challenge is to get 700 miles out of a tank (~35 mpg). My calculated high is 25.64 mpg, but I pulled a 6'x12' single axle covered wagon for half of that tank. After my visit to the foriegn country of California, a couple 3.50 a gallon tanks slowed me down. The evic has read up to 32 mpg consitently... so maybe after break in, turn off the ac, loose a few pounds, kick the dog out, stop pulling trailers, etc.

You better leave the windows up, other wise you will lose mpg's from windows acting like air brakes. If you get your speed down to about 65 mph I have no doubt you could break the 700 mile mark, but just have a fuel can or two in back of Jeep just in case go past 700 miles and with a 100 miles to next fuel center.

I am lucky to get 400 miles from a tank, but I drive much faster than you do.

Loosing a few pounds... <insert crying old man picture here>

Just some FYI on getting more than 20.5 in the tank. I was an automotive engineer in the aftermarket until my plant was closed. All fuel tanks are designed with vapor space. On a gasoline vehicle, in my experience, a fuel tank has about 20% vapor space in the actual volume of the fuel tank. If the temperature is not very warm you can actually "force" more fuel into the tank than it was designed for. I don't recommend it as it may start splashing on the roll over valve, the vent valve, and it could hold the filler neck valve open - but it can be done.

Never drove a diesel VW or some other vehicle have you. We always do something called venting to be able to fill that void on vehicles that use the same tank for gasser as their diesel. A4 VW's would hold about 17 1/2 gal in a 14.5 tank and the VW B4 wagons would hold about 26 in an 18 gal tank, allow those B4 wagons to go 1100 to 1300 miles on a tank. Nice thing about diesel is no vapor expansion like gassers.

no - I have no experience with any diesel besides my dad's duramax - which is a monster. I did'nt realize the diesel didn't have as much vapor. I am sure the gasser and crd share the same fuel tank - it would be dumb not to. The tooling alone for a 7 layer injection molded tank will run close to 1MM$.
