Hey all, newbie to the forum. I'm having an issue with my 2005 Liberty CRD: it revs easily in Park and Neutral but lacks torque in Drive and only revs to about 900 rpm. So far, I’ve already checked:

EGR valve
Turbo hoses and connections
Engine timing
Fuel system pressure
Intake connections

Everything appears normal, yet the engine still struggles to accelerate without unusual sounds or leaks.

I’m looking for guidance from anyone experienced with CRD troubleshooting. I've done a lot of testing and would appreciate someone to talk to or ideas from the forum.

sounds like your in limp mode. Have you checked the turbo actuator for full movement? It should move up and down about an inch. You can hook up a hand vacuum pump straight to the actuator diaphragm or do the vacuum bypass. Do a search on here and you find instructions on how to do it.
Also, you might want to join the CRD facebook page as you will get a whole lot more help over there too. There are a couple of CRD mobile/traveling mechanics that know this engine inside and out and can walk you through troubleshooting.

Could be lots of things.
Is it putting out a lot of black smoke when revving under load?
Have you scanned it for codes? What are they?
Is your EGR system still in operation? If so, it could be the EGR valve stuck open or the FCV has failed and is stuck partly shut limiting air and boost flow into the engine.
Do you still have a CAT installed? IF so, it could be the CAT is stopped up preventing exhaust flow out of the engine.
Timing could be off, belt could have jumped one tooth on one of the cams or on the crank pulley. This would make the engine run very poorly.
Lots of things need to be checked and ruled out to find the problem.
Where are you located?

I have not checked the turbo actuator yet. I was checking the vacuum lines the other day and thought I had good pull on them but in the end I need to confirm actuator movement. That vacuum pump is making a buzzing sound which I see some have said may be leading to failure. I'm still searching for the instructions but will get 'er done soon. Thanks for the advice on that and the FB groups.

I'm out west, Nevada. Yes, black smoke under load. I have two codes, P0073 and P0107. I've replaced both sensors and no change but can't remove the codes. The EGR is still in operation. Yes it has a CAT installed. The engine runs beautifully so I can't imagine I jumped a tooth on the belt.

Symptoms:
Severe torque loss under load
Engine will not rev past ~900 RPM in Drive/Reverse
Engine revs normally in Park/Neutral (to ~2500 RPM)
Heavy black smoke under load
Engine starts and idles normally

Observations:
Smooth idle
Smooth steady-state operation (1500–2000 RPM)
Immediate throttle response in Park
Strong creep torque at idle in gear
Immediate clean shutdown
Heavy smoke at torque limit
No hesitation in neutral revving
No unstable idle
No RPM hunting
No improvement when MAP or MAF unplugged
No bubbles from external tank supply line
No torque recovery with external fuel supply

What are your thoughts? Do I close of the EGR and see what happens in addition to checking the turbo actuator?
