Hellos - Been awhile since my last post. So I still have my CRD - since 2015 - The past month I have been having starting issues, intermittent at first, but the starter would not engage. Sometimes it would work, other times not. I changed and checked all the regular stuff - ignition switch, security module, all the sensors on the transmission, the starter itself. I finally had to take it to a shop [the labor will be allot]. The tech traced all the possible paths. ALL good. The problem seems to be in the ECU. I dont understand it, but that is what they say. I had a backup ECU that I bought in 2015 when I did the tune [forget the company]. Bought through ID-parts I think?? So, Has anyone had this problem? They tell me there is no fix for the issue, that sending off the the current ECU may not even fix the problem. So I gave the shop the ECU Ive had sitting in a box all these years. Is it correct that the CRDs ECU is part number specific? Does it go off the VIN? ..or the number on the old ECU? I am worried that the tune I input will no longer exist [of course]. Is changing the ECU as easy as swapping it out? ..so many problems... TY for the help [anyone] TY

You should post your problem on the Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/libertydiesels To answer your ECM/PCM question, The replacement ECM/PCM needs to have the same part number. O5 and 06 ECM/PCM's are not interchangeable. They have to be programmed for your specific VIN in order to work and you can always install a Yeti-Tune which is what most all of us are using any more. As for your problem of intermittent starts, what you describe is NOT an ECM/PCM problem. Your starter will turn over regardless. Start with removing the starter and having it tested, if it's okay then you may have a defective ignition. The only other problem would be dirty ground contacts or hot contacts. I'd remove them and clean/grease them prior to reinstallation. Good Luck! R.

I have doubts that your ECU is causing your your starter to not engage. The ECU is pretty robust, short of shorting it out it. If the jeep runs, then its not an ECU problem. I would start looking at the wires to the starter and wires under the fuse box. You might have corrosion inside the wires or a possible break. As mentioned, take the starter out and have it tested, it might be weak.

Does the engine spin over and simply not start when you engage the key or does it not do anything at all when you engage the key? Totally different problems! Is it holding a red security light on the dash all the time? This will keep one from starting. Keep in mind, ECU failure is almost unheard of on this vehicle, very rare indeed. You must rule out any other problems with all the other remote inputs required that allow the ECM to engage the ASD relay and the starter relay. If only one input is missing to the ECM, it will not allow the engine to crank over or start. A bad ground or loose or bad connection on one of the sensors could be the cause of an intermittently no start/no crank condition. Could just be a bad starter relay or a bad ASD relay, there have been some reported. If you jump the starter at the starter relay, does it spin over and does it start? Have you tried swapping some of the relays around to rule out a bad relay. You could jump out the ASD relay and see if it will start. Could just be a faulty starter? If the starter relay is getting a signal when you engage the key but the starter does not spin, it could be a bad starter motor or a bad starter solenoid, or the starter relay itself could be bad. Lots of possibilities that require testing pinpoint the exact cause... There are lots of tests you could perform to help rule out some of the items before making a call on the ECM. And yes, the ECM is VIN and SKIM programed for each vehicle it is installed in. Swapping one out requires a good bit of reprogramming.
