| Post subject: | EGR flow valve |
I had a strange happening today. I pulled up to work and shut down the jeep.....a noise continued after I turned the key. It was quite loud....an electric motor running. I opened up the hood and it seemed to be the fuel pump. I started and stopped the engine several times and each time the pump continued to run for 60 seconds or more after the engine had been stopped and the key was taken out of the ignition. I've never heard the pump run after the engine was shut down before. After this happened the first time today, now the fuel pump starts running right when I turn the key...before the engine starts. Houston, we have a problem. Anyone had this happen before? |

There is no electric fuel pump on these engines. It has a small mechanical lift pump built into the high pressure pump. You might be hearing what others have heard, something about the EGR air flow control valve. Good luck!! |

Or maybe the CRD has a auxilary waterpump, which runs when the engine shuts off. Thats what my ML320 had. |

Same problem here...diagnosed yesterday 6/7/2006 and part should be here Tuesday. What's funny is when I shut my Jeep off, the noise will cycle, so it sounds jut like one of those emergency notifications that you see on TV late at night. Funny but annoying... |

Update: Called the dealership close to my house. The service manage said that there was nobody at his shop that has training for the CRD and I should take it to another dealership.....I appreciated his honesty, but that meant I had to drive out to the suburbs. Took it to the dealership near work and one guy looked at it, went and got another guy. The instant I turned the key and the noise started, he smiled and said it was the egr flow control...he has seen several of them, apparently. You guys were right. I knew you all would know. The parts are on order. In the mean time, I have to listen to that incredibly annoying sound. The only way I can describe it is that it's a combination of a kitchenAid mixer spinning on high speed along with a very old window air conditioner going at the same time. Quite pleasant. |

Please tell me which dealer service department you went to so I can start going there. It's nice they even had a clue... |

| Post subject: | EGR flow valve FIXED |
Update: The part came in after 3 weeks of waiting. I just picked up the Jeep today and all seems to be back to normal. I did notice something since it is fixed. When turning the key to OFF, the engine stops promptly without any rattle or coughing. When the EGR flow valve was bad, the engine would kind of "cough" to a stop and cause a bit of vibration. Now it is just a very positive stop altogether. In retrospect, I do remember noticing the engine becoming a bit rough at stop about a week or two before the EGR flow valve started grinding and making noise. At the time, I thought that it was acting a bit rough all the sudden, but just ignored it because it was not voilent or anything...I thought maybe it was just in my head. If yours starts to be a bit rough when you shut it down, that could be an early symptom that you may have the EGR flow part going bad. ...or it could probably be a number of things. Just a thought. The service people at the dealership told me that they would be sending my paperwork in the mail later because they had trouble identifying the appropriate repair code for the warranty work. Apparently they don't get many of these in the shop. |
