These were sold in the US for a few years and I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that the engine was sourced from Renault. |

Funny how all the new press releases credit Jeep with releasing the first Mid Sized Diesel SUV with the Liberty when they did it already with the 85-87 Cherokee I believe... |

I test drove a turbo diesel Jeep Cherokee and the problem was, no a/c, 2 dr, manual shift when wife wanted auto, very bottom end unit and ugly dull color. Drove the the 4.0 and it was an easy sell. |

They also used the little Perkins diesel in the Jeeps years ago. |

liberty=midsize cherokee=compact??? those crazy amc F***ers put the diesel into the xj cherokees when it first rolled out(and later comanches), but you have to remember only 3 engines would have been available then, the gm v6, the renault diesel, and the classic 4banger (no I6) From what i've read they were mildy popular in foreign markets but very rare in the US. i think the renault puts out like a whopping 90 horses |

People forget that International Harvester put a Nissan diesel into their Scout in the 70's. In 1980, their last year of production, they put out a turbocharger on it so it almost had adequate power. It would get 20 plus mpg, and had great longevity. Scout was a great 4 wheel drive but they coundn't sell enough of them to stay in production. |

I love it, and learned to 4x4 in it, but man was it heavy - and THIRSTY! I never knew about the rare diesel Scouts until long after I had sold mine so to get mpg in the 20s was amazing for that heavy beast! |

They were heavy, no plastic bumpers or anything else. My SS 396 Impala 4sd with 4:11 positrac could just barely tow the thing. |

It was when Renault controled AMC. It had a turbo also. There was a small Winneabago camper that used the same turbo diesel, maybe a whole Renault van(?). t was before they started basing the Ralita on VW's Eurovan chassis |

http://www.vmmotori.it/en/01/02/00/index.jsp Check this page out. If it was around 92 it could have been a kin to our CRD's Edit: that should have been 94 |

I had a 1980 Scout II with the Nissan turbodiesel that I bought used in about 1986. About 20 mpg was all it could manage, though that beat the heck out of most any other comparable offerings then. The engine had great low-end torque, but would smoke pure black under load until the turbo spooled up at about 1600 rpm. You didn't want to follow it at low rpm up a tough Jeep trail. Mechanically, the Scout II was a tank--Dana 44 axles front and rear, BW 4-speed truck transmission (wide or close ratio, mine was a close ratio), and good ol' leaf springs. Unfortunately, where the Scout fell down was the body. They were a rattling mess right off the showroom floor. The body constantly leaked dust into the passenger cabin because it was impossible to seal the doors and windows properly. They were noisy, uncomfortable, and unrefined. I sold it in about 1990. The Cherokee was just about as good off-road, and was/is more comfortable, too. As to the mid-1980's Jeep Cherokee with the 2.1 Renault turbodiesel, a guy who frequented my mechanic at the time bought one. It was GUTLESS, pitiful on the highway, not much better off-road. I believe the guy owned it for a very short time and then traded it. This when the highway speed limit was still 55. I'll take my CRD any day, though I still don't like the IFS. The solid-axle setup in the Cherokee was, in my opinion, much better off-road, and not obnoxious on the highway. |
