Post subject:  EGR Noise?

After parking the CRD in the garage and shutting it off I noticed a high pitched whine. It sounded to me like an electronic fuel pump cycling. I know the CRD doesn't have a fuel pump so I'm wondering if this is the start of an EGR problem. Also, the sound went on for about 10-20 seconds and then I heard what sounded like a valve opening/closing and the noise stopped. I'm bringing it to the dealer tomorrow for the BCM reprogram, I think I'll have them take a look at the EGR too. BTW, mine is an 06 with 6100 miles.

It's the EGR flow control valve. It closes when you shut the motor off (that's the high pitched whine) then after 10-20 seconds it opens.
They all do this. If you DON'T hear it you have a problem.

After 12000 miles my jeep started making a sort of buzzing noise that wasn't there before ( not sure if this is the same thing) but I took mine in and they replaced the EGR valve I think. Its doesn't make this buzzing noise anymore. My noise was an intermittent noise for about 30 seconds then it shut off. I hope this helps.

Spud

BTW the PN replace on the invoice says: 5142799-AA. Valve EGR Airfl 140?

Mine did the exact same thing back on June 7th. Got out of the Jeep and it "whined", but very loud and not normal sounding at all. Drove it to the dealer that day and they ordered (supposedly) a new EGR flow control deal. Before that day, I had never heard anything whatsoever after shutting the Jeep down. Mine sounded like a stand mixer set on high at first....after a couple of weeks, it has become a bit more quiet. Either it (the part) is slowly dying, or the crud that was in it is working its way out. Either way, they are replacing it under warranty...hopefully soon.

I got a pulsing buzzing sound from under the hood. I first heard it when shutting off the engine, because it was making the sound for about one minute after shutting off the engine. Now I can hear it while the engine is running and for about one minute after shuttin down.

If it pulses and never goes away when running then what you hear is the viscious heater,
would be nice if it was not there, but it keeps you warm in winter.

Can you tell me a little about this viscious heater? Where it is, what it does, ect.

Easy to find. While standing in front/facing the engine, upper left component on the serpentine belt. It looks like an A/C compressor due to the clutch pack. Look for the cluster of heater hoses to the left side of the engine. The CAC hose from the turbo to the intercooler loops over top of these hoses. These heater hoses connect to the viscious heater.

Inside the heater is a viscious fluid chamber with a spinning paddle wheel on the shaft. The drag of the paddle wheel moving in the fluid causes heat which is transfered to warm the coolant loop. The viscious heater clutch is controlled by a temperature switch. When the water temp is low, it kicks in to assist the engine to warm-up quicker.

Thanks! Seems this should stop any worry about wet-stacking.

Thanks!

FYI: You will feel this clutching in and out when it is cold. It makes considerable drag, more noticable than an A/C compressor. I have a feeling this is one reason why the mileage really drops-off considerably when it's cold.

Well comfirmed today, it was the EGR valve. They have one on order from LA to be installed later this week.

Post subject:  EGR Valve

When posting, perhaps we need to clarify that the EGR flow control valve and the EGR are indeed two seperate parts. I am assuming it was the flow control valve that was bad? If so, did you have any tranny shudder problems?

no shuddering problems, will post what they fixed when I get it back.

Good call. Right before my EGR flow control valve went out I heard a high-pitched whine after shutdown. Good luck with the fix. I hope it goes well. Mine hasn't given me any problems since they replaced it.

I got it back today and it was a full EGR replacement. Checked the part number with parts dept.
