Ok guys, getting ready for 900 mile roundtrip with kids and was wondering if there you fine group of people could recommend a checklist of hoses and such that I should check before I leave and maybe during the trip?

My situation is this:
New 2006 CRD Sport with tox pkg.
I've put 3k miles on it already with no problems. Most of that on highway at 60 to 80 mph.
Will be hauling 3000lb trailer over some mountains and through Wyoming. About 450 each way.

Are there any particular hoses that I should be watching?
Any particluar parts I could bring to ensure I'm not stuck in middle of nowhere waiting on tow? (if i can reach).

Just looking for things that I might not think of seeing that I have never owned a diesel.

Thanks all.

Just bring short and long handled phillips and flat head screwdrivers along, and a bottle of Power Service. The only thing preventative right now may be checking that all the hoses (intercooler, turbo, radiator) are snugged up.

Use 4 to 8oz of Power Service per fillup to disperse any water in the fuel from the unknown fuel stop locations you'll be at.

For certain, go out and drive around a bit to get the tranny warm, then follow the user manual to check the transmission fluid level... The diesel is hard on transmissions, so it must be full.

About the power service, don't let it leak or spill into the interior of the vehicle. If it does you will be riding down the road with the windows down for the next 6 months.

What I have done for years is to take the gallon jug of PS and about 8 of the 10 or 12 oz plastic Coke bottles and fill them with about 8 to 10 oz each with my PS. This allows me to simply just pour in the PS from the soda bottle and then throw it in the trash can when empty and not have to worry about big bottle spilling into the vehicle. I had a friend with a VW Jetta TDI that had a gallon bottle spill in his inside spare wheel area and it took the about 6 months even after cleaning the mess up for the smell to go away, and God help you if it gets on the carpet as some of the VW crowd has had happen.

Wow - that's more tools then I pack when I set out on a trip in my '29 Ford. -- not a phillips head screw on the car :-)

What are the normal retail outlets that sell Power Service additives?

Thanks,

Parts stores, Wal-Mart, truck repair centers, fuel stations that have a large truck trade, farm type hardware stores.

Pulling a wagon over the mountain make sure you have enough hand tools to do the basics, screwdrivers, 5/16 nut driver for the hoses, pliers, etc... Would also take extra oil just in case it turns into an oil pig under load. The one thing that will strand you faster than anything is blowing off a CAC hose and loosing the clamp. I would take a couple of extra hose clamps. This is just a personal habit. Have driven commercial tour buses for many years, don't go anywhere without my small "roadbox" (including ductape and silicone).

I went on a 1600 road trip through the mountains several months ago. The only thing I brought with me was a credit card for fuel and 1/2 liter of some left over 505.01 for topoff. The credit card was used but the top off oil wasn't. Its a new vehicle. If it had 100,000 miles on it, I'd probably bring some tools and hose clamps.

Well - all went well. No mishaps except for my brother moving my CRD while I was there and leaving the keys turned forward all night.....dead battery in morning. Threw quick charge on it and all was well.

Background info. I hauled a coleman popup weighing about 3000lbs+ and approx 25ft in length. I started from Salt Lake and up I80, across Wyoming and then back down into Colorado. About 420 miles each way. Elec surge brakes.

Details:
* Looks like I got just shy of 20 mpg on 1st tank and that was up I80 for those of you familar with road!!! Didn't keep track after that.
* I could have ran just about any speed I wanted except that at about 72+, I got quite a bit of swaying of trailer which really pushed me around. Didn't matter how I loaded the darn trailer. Next investment=sway bar!
* Checked oil at fill ups and didn't use a drop.
* I did add 4 oz of Power Service with each tank after the first and I have to say I could notice a bit of difference in noise. (Funny note, I was in Flying J truckstop trying to figure out which Power Service to buy when I watched 4 truck drivers come in and buy the product. Made decision pretty easy and if the pro's are using it, must be something to it)

Fun Note: Had a chance to throw it in 4 wheel drive(without trailer) and bomb around the area. What a blast! Went up and down a few washes..pretty steep too and absolutely no problem. Also was running about 45 or so around sandy/gravel corner and the ESP kicked on......pretty cool but a little boring :-). I was ready to power slide around corner but no need...just pulled me around the corner. Excuse my gee whiz gushing here, never had vehicle with this option.......

Thanks for all the advice and take care.....
