Post subject:  Hissing sound on acceleration

... yesterday I noticed a "hissing" sound coming from the engine compartment whenever the rpms reached or exceeded 1,700. It wasn't the normal sound of the turbo ... sounded kind of like air releasing from a small hole. Is this a normal noise? I've had this car for a year and haven't heard it before. No odd behavior other than the noise, boost was fine, no dashboard indications of problem. Can anyone clue me in?

I hear it once in awhile too, but only in my neighborhood when I'm driving with the windows down, radio off, and slow enough to hear it. Don't know. I checked all my hoses and found nothing.

Is it by chance a fan clutch that might be engaging? I have to admit ignorance as to the CRD's anatomy, but I know in my Mercedes when the engine reaches a certain temp (100c), a fan clutch engages and you can hear somewhat of a "whoosh" upon accel. It was fairly hot yesterday ... perhaps I didn't hear it in on past hot days because I had the AC on (yesterday I did not ... I had the windows down instead).

That very well could be it. We have the belt driven fan on the engine side of the radiator and the electric fan on the front side of the radiator. Mine only runs when it's hot out, or mild out and I've been working the Jeep real hard.

You might be hearing your turbo spinning. Mine seems to wine a bit as it picks up speed.

Check your CAC hoses and clamps for a leak. Specifically, the hose from the intercooler to the throttle body is prone to splitting on the underside. Also check the hose directly out of the turbo for rubbing against the cold air intake from the filter. A damaged CAC hose may also be difficult to see as they have that protective weave covering them.

I'm almost 100% sure you're hearing the turbo spool up. Turbodiesels spool up all the time. You will notice it if you feather the throttle or climb a hill, or what-not.

Unless it's really loud (like a leak), you should be fine. :)

I'm pretty sure it's not the turbo, unless I've lost my mind ... I always noticed the turbo sound before (I LOVE the sound of it spooling up!) ... but this sound is definately new. It sounds as though somebody is squeezing an inflatable toy with a hole in it.

I kind of perused the hoses, although I have admit I'm not familiar with which one is which, and some of them (or parts of some) are so inaccessable ... didn't see anything blatant. Unfortunately I think I'll have to take it to the dealership service dept and see if they can shed some light ... it's under warranty so I don't want to take it elsewhere.

Sad thing is, I probably know as much or more about this car (very little) as the dealership. Wanna take bets on how long it takes them to figure out where the spark plugs are?

Well, kids, two months later, problem diagnosed and fixed! First time I took it to the dealership about 6 weeks ago, the diesel guy was not there, so they had a regular mech look it it. I got a kind man calling me and explaining to me (according to them, a dingbat lady) that 'Mame, it's just your turbocharger spooling up.' I said I was sure it wasn't the normal sound, and they sort of begrudgingly said I could bring it in again and have the diesel guy look at it. Needless to say, I got caught up in 500 other things before I had the chance, and both times I tried, the diesel guy was either out or on his vacation week. Well, I finally got in there today for him to look at it. As soon as he revved it up, he said 'yup, that's not normal, there's a hose leak somewhere.' He found it quickly, in the hose to the turbo. He replaced it right there while I sat in the passenger seat and bam, I was off and running. What a relief ... 1) I'm not crazy or incompetant and 2) the diesel mechanic knew what he was doing, IDed the problem and was able to solve it quickly without the mass confusion that usually goes on at car dealerships. It's nice to know that there's someone capable of helping with my car if it has a future problem.

Warranties also feel good ... I'm used to repairs coming with that painful feeling of handing over a big pile of cash afterward, which always tempers the good feeling of having a reparied vehicle.

And now that I have a new hose, I can notice a difference in the turbo's boost ... it had declined over time so it wasn't that noticable until it was corrected ... now I feel like I'm in a rocket launch after each traffic light. 8)

Make sure you reward that dealership and mechanic with positive word-of-mouth praise. That is the best kind of advertising and the hardest to get, most businesses recognize this and are very appreciative when they get it.

My 2000 F-250 Powerstroke 7.3 made a sound in cold weather when accelerating that sounded like you had a cardboard box being dragged by the undercarraige. Could near fiquire where the sound was coming from. Only happened below about 35 degrees. Sure do miss that truck. Traded it for the 05 Liberty. BIG mistake. That truck was trouble-free and got 21 MPG. But was a 2 wheel drive regular cab. With the woman and the Rottie, just wasn't enough room. Sure do miss that truck.
