Saw one online that is installed exit side of turbo. Basically, drill hole in pipe, install probe and secure with SS band clamp. Ran engine till exhaust gas was at 300 degrees. Comments, suggestions. |

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... php?t=9538 Ran a thread on it a little while ago but no real interest...I think it is needed. I am sure once someone installs one and shows how well it works, more interest will be generated. |

I am interested in a turbo timer, I just think it might be hard to do cleanly because of the Sentry key security. I wish DC would upgrade the firmware in the Mopar remote start to let it act as a turbo timer. All the parts are there, it would just be a programming change. It would also be applicable to the Dodge pickups with the Cummins. I would buy the Mopar remote start in a heart beat if it included a turbo timer. I did email SP Diesel a while back about their turbo timer. They say it has been used successfully on a CRD. They were a little snotty in some of their correspondence so that didn't exactly close the deal, but I haven't ruled it out either. |

If by "they" you mean SP, I think you're right. Pretty sure touching the brake pedal will kill the engine. I'm just not sure how they get around the Sentry Key issue. |

I think once it is started the "key" is no longer a factor...once the turbo timer is added. Once the turbo timer shuts off the Jeep, then the Sentry Key is needed to restart...that's my take |

I can tell you that I had a non Sentry Key cut for a backup in case of keys locked in vehicle. It will start the Jeep, but after about two seconds it dies. I have been told if this done too many times in succession the computer will lock out. I'm on a business trip, but when I get around my Jeep again I'll try to fool it with the Sentry Key close to the ignition, but the non Sentry in the ignition. If I can get it to run that way I'll take the Sentry Key away and see what happens. Not a conclusive test, but it should shed some light. |

I considered putting one on my Jetta TDI, however I opted to wait and see if I burned up any turbo bearings. I figured if I burned up 1 turbo I'd install the timer or temperature controlled shutoff. After 7 years on the original TDI turbo I figure I don't really need one. I never wait for it to cool down and I've had no problems. No problems on my Jeep so far either. |

Does VW recommend turbo cool down in the owner's manual on the TDI? |

The dealer had a lot of trouble finding the owners manuals for my Jetta, and I never actually got the TDI section of the manual. I have a exhaust gas temperature gauge on my 7.3 liter Powerstoke diesel. The only time when I let that turbo cool down is when I'm running on the highway at 70 -75 mph and I pull off at a rest stop, then immediately park. In those cases I'll leave the truck idling while we stop. Other than that I just shut it off. It's a model year 2000 and I had no turbo problems on that vehicle either. If you want a gauge or a shut down sensor, go for it! If you don’t want to mess with it, I don't think it's a big deal. I guess I was trying to say, don't leave any sleep over it. As far as the original question, the basic steps are correct. I haven't even crawled under my Jeep to look at the exhaust system, but on the Powerstroke you need to remove the pipe when you drill the hole so you don't end up with metal bits in your turbo. Other than that, it's a pretty simple job. |

Having owned 2 VW TDI's there is no mention of cool down that I remember reading. I did allow for cool down of turbo when pulling off the interstate but never more the a minute. Just basic time to get unbelted, get my wallet and look around to see what is happening around me before shutting of the engine. Around town I never did a cool down and the new owner did the same and the car is a 100k mile plus car now with original turbo. We won't even talk mileage on MB 300D turbo I5 cars, other then to say 300k mile plus is not unusual for tubo's and it would be a very, very rare car that was practiced turbo cool down with by the owners. |

Actually, if you've replaced the stock muffler, you actually do have what amounts to a cooldown indicator. After 60 to 90 seconds sitting with the tranny in park, you can hear the change in exhaust note as something in the EGR system shifts over. If you check the FSM under the Emissions section, it describes what's going on, actually shuts off the EGR loop to improve emissions at idle. |

Not that this really matters in the grand scheme, but the manual for my VW Jetta Wolsfburg (1.8t gasser motor) listed a cool-down period. I always did and it was running like new when I got rid of it at 70k miles. I also perform a cool down in my CRD KJ. But it's never much more than what OldNavy talked about. Park, gather things, unbelt, look around...finish listening to song, shut off motor. Maybe a minute. I checked on a turbo-timer the same week I bought this thing. No one had them but SP Diesel was talking about making them. I'd probably buy one from SP Diesel or Mopar, but I'm not sure I'd trust anyone else. I think it would be a great thing to have, especially if you use the KJ for a lot of long trips (especially towing on the interstate). |

Hey that usually takes me at least a minute sometimes more, unless I am about to have an accident in the car. |
