Post subject:  Turbo lag and catalytic converter

Hello, I've been lurking for quite awhile on the CRD forum. I finally bought one last month, despite many of the problems I've read about, and I hope for the best.

I'd like to thank all of you for the useful information, and enthusiasm you have to share you experiances and lessons learned with this forum.

I've been wondering if anyone has opened up the exahust on a CRD and ran it off-road without the catalytic converter. I'm curious if this impediment to exhaust flow is one of the primary reasons for the turbo-lag experianced.

CoRDially, GilaMonster

Turbos and Lag are synonymous by their nature. The Variable Vain Turbo addresses that issue somewhat but other things that cause lag are the distance from the turbo to the intercooler ( length the air must travel ) and engine speed. A less restrictive exhaust really affects mid and top end...not really low end when the engine rpms are slow. If we had a wastegate (which variable vane turbos do not have) you can electronically or mechanically adjust the wastegate to build up pressure a liitle faster and hold it longer before releasing it, but you will still have lag. The size of the turbo also affects turbo lag but variable vane turbos effectively give you many turbo sizes as the vanes move (adjusted electronically on our KJs)

I just think of it as the calm before the storm and wait in anticipation

I have open up the cat and put on a glasspack, the lag is still there. BUT when the boost does kick in, hold onto your jock straps.

Yep that is what opening an exhaust on a turbo will do...kick in mid range and top end. Opeing an exhaust can kill a little bottom end because of the lack of back pressure. The VVT should compensate for that so it might be a wash.
