I haven't bought one yet, but I'm really close to pulling the trigger on a 2006 Liberty with the CRD. However, after reading all of the fun that seems to occur with the EGR valve, I was wondering how difficuly it will be to replace one when it is out of warranty? Has anyone done it and do you know what the cost of the part is? I have done a bunch of work on old Chevy/detroit 6/2 and 6.5 diesels, but this seems to be quite a different beast. Also, since the 2006 has a 10/100k mile drivetrain warranty, does that cover EGR problems up until 100k? Thanks and looking forward to joining the fellowship of the CRD. |

Where did you get a 10/100k drivetrain warranty unless you paid extra, or will pay extra for one? The 7/70 was eliminated for 2006 with nothing to take it's place. My 7/70 for my 2005 CRD does not cover the EGR as it's not a "drivetrain" component. EGR runs about $250-300 online for the part, not sure about how to get my hands in there to replace it if need be. |

Sorry... I think I typoed... the 10/100k is on the diesel motor as is listed in the manual. If the 7/70 drivetrain does not cover the EGR, then I'm guessing the 10/100 motor warranty will not either. Now I just have to decide if an extended warranty is worth purchasing... |

Well the EGR seems like it would be considered part of the Diesel Engine...it needs it to run properly. Maybe you can get a clarification from the dealer od DC about this? |

Actually, this may be a good question to test the service manager of the local Jeep dealer on. I know they also work on Cummins and Powerstroke at this dealer, so I'm hoping they will be somewhat diesel saavy! I'll let you know what kind of response I get. |

I think you could argue the egr being part of the drivetrain. If the egr fails wouldn't it make the vehicle undrivable or cause poor drivability. The egr is part of the engine and has coolant going through it and is also piped to the turbo. How is it not part of the engine. If they deny powertrain warranty on it because of it being classified as an emission part wouldn't the same be true of the turbo?? If the turbo is part of the drive train I cannot see how the egr isn't.This isn't as simple as a bad o2 sensor or a leaking evap can. When they fail you get the cel and drive on with no issues and no limp mode. The egr in the crd is required for normal engine operation. I call that part of the powertrain. Sorry for the ranting |

EGR is not part of drive train by EPA rules and they are the ones mandating its use and requiring specific warranty for various emmissions parts. EPA list all emissions parts required by name and then puts them into various goups for warranty purposes. What you suggest would imply a government agency is capable of using logical thought processes that most normal people have and would use like you have been doing here. There may be some other old time dieselheads here that remembers when the DOT considered a turbo on a diesel as a muffler and those turbo's were stamped as certified DOT muffler. Never forget the first one I saw, I could not believe it, but there it was stamped on the turbo housing. |

I think I am on the way to EGR failure number 2, check engine light is on and throwing egr codes at 24k. If I had a 3rd one go out after 36k and they tried to refuse it I would be making serious noise. We all need to make more noise so they fix the problem rather than just throw parts at it! We should all call the 800 number and voice concern. |

I've decided to come up with my own backup plan in case ULSD doesn't cure the EGR problems. It's called a Mercedes-Benz 300D. And if worst comes to worst, I only owe 6K on the CRD. It could make one heck of a good down payment towards a E320 CDI. |

You gotta be kidding me, they're going to make the same mistake AGAIN, on an MB engine? Looks like the bean counters are at work again, because the engine is going in a lowly Jeep and not an MB. If worst comes to worst, and I do decide to try going the E320 CDI route, you can be bloody sure I'll be popping the hood and takin a close look at it's CCV system. At least on the 320, it's an inline 6 3.2, hopefully with a better system installed. |

The I6 is in it's last year and production stopped this past spring and now they are tooling up for the new Blutec V6 that I posted the picture of above. It will be in the Sprinter, E320, R-(same platform as Picifica) Class, and one SUV I believe it was ML-350 but don't remember for sure. Not only those cars (currently the GC has had the I6 CDI in it for several years in Europe) and as you mentioned the GC, the LX series in Chrysler/Dodge lineup and possiably the Durango since it is the same shared platform as the MB SUV that will have the V6 CDI diesel.

I would jump on one of those in a NY minute. |

Had a guy from the oncoming shift at work tonight tell me I was wasting my money buying a used MB diesel, for the same price ( about 8 grand) I could buy a new Japanese econobox that got even better fuel mileage. Common decency prevents me from quoting verbatim my reply, other than to say I questioned his basic intelligence and planet of origin. |

Hey just kidding, nothing like poking fun at a group that used to be the cause of me working weekends and holidays. Pulling, working on or installing a scope under those conditions while the sub crew and most of the sub tender crew was on liberty never left us with a warm fuzzy for the 0's that were in charge. Worst New years day I had aboard a sub tender was doing a 3HEP on a scope and it cold enough there was ice in the bay. |
