Post subject:  Driving Style/Conditions and Mileage

There have been a lot of discussions here regarding CRD mileage issues and I wanted to give 1) my personal experience and 2) an antidotal experience from today.

1)The CRD mileage will often be slightly lower with bio diesel and while I don’t have the ability to test beyond B20 one may assume that difference will increase slightly with the increase in bio percentage.

2)Mileage improves significantly as you accumulate miles, probably in the first 20K miles and generally beginning around 6K miles.

3)Driving with as much attention to the tachometer as to the speedometer will dramatically improve mileage.

4)Driving style and conditions will dramatically affect mileage.

As an example of the last point would be my experience this morning while on a 55 mile round trip to buy some farm equipment parts. My EVIC was last set around 650 miles ago with mixed driving during that period. On my route this morning is one steep hill about 1 mile long on a suburban arterial that required driving at around 40 MPH in 3rd. At the bottom of that hill my EVIC read 25 MPG and at the top 24.5 MPG. Over the next 10 miles of driving at 60 MPH and about 1650 RPM I was only able to recover only .3 MPG on the EVIC.

My daily driving to and from work involves a similar situation of driving up and down some steep hills and long stops idling at traffic lights. The impact of that kind of driving and the impact of not being able to lock into 4th or 5th gear really reduces mileage on my CRD.
