2004 Sport, Need lift and tires advice

Dude, that is a picture of your tie rod. Do you even have 4x4, I don't see the axle going through the clevis?

Wait. I thought an IFS had CV joints regardless if the front wheels were driven or not. If so does that mean a 4x2 can be lifted higher than a 4x4?? Before I took out the clevis lift I had a knocking sound coming from the front when I would turn the wheel and now it is very minimal and almonst not existent. Why would the tie rod make a knocking sound, I know that CV joints make a knocking sound when something is wrong. Yes it is a 4x2.

Ok. I already admitted I was wrong, but explain to me what a CV joint is. I thought it had to do with the steering? I thought the tie rods were what adjusted the toe on the alignment. What are those called??

CV stands for constant velocity, it is the joint found on each end of our axles in the front axle. Here is a defination I found online
"Constant Velocity Joints (aka homokinetic or CV joints) allow a rotating shaft to transmit power through a variable angle, at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play. They are mainly used in front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars."

Thanks TDI4BY for the info. Its all a learning process. I wasn't trying to be an a$$hole or anything. This is my first RWD car with IFS. The tie rods look like the same thing as the CV joints on the VW I had before. But now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

What's really funny is , the VW CV boots were probably as small too..... It's all good. Man I used to love GI Joe

It looks good but you are a little low in the tail. I looked at you detail pix and it looks like you left the OEM spring cushion out. You can easily slip trhis in in between the polyurethane spacer and the metal plate. All you have to do is unbolt the upper schock bolt and jack the rear up, get someone to push down (stand on) the wheel and it can be slipped in, I actually did this by myself - don't ask !
This will give you another .5" in the rear and level you out nicely.

What I finally did was lower the clevis all the way and leave it at stock height, and left the rear without the extra spacer. Now it looks pretty even I think. Were you looking at the new pics with the tires?? The pics without the tires were when I had the clevis still lifted.

I think I might get Al's upper control arms, and if I do I will probably lift the clevis back up and put the extra spacer in the rear.

I looked at all pix including the ones with the new tires. It looked definetely better with the new tires - so that is with the clevis down. I still think it looks even better when the rear is a little up from the front as oppposed to level.
Actually I have the problem myself with my CRD, the front is too high for whatever reason. If you have time please do me a favour , tell me how much space you got between the top of the clevis clamp and the bottom of the steel spring housing (not the shock) but the part where the spring sits on. It looks like I got about a quarter of an inch. I think you have less now. You can look at it and check if you turn your steering wheel fully to the left or the right.

After 4 months and 5k miles, I'm thinking of taking off the lift and going with some 235/70/16 tires. My problem is that I do all highway driving, and with the lift and the wider tires my gas mileage went from about 21.5 to 17.5 miles per gallon. Plus the added wear to the ball joints without Al's control arms has me concerned to. So I'm thinking of selling the wheels and tires, and the lift kit if anybody is interested.

I know this type of thing should be in the for sale section, but I am looking for feedback also. If you are not interested, leave some feedback and give me some ideas. Also can 235/70/16 fit without a lift??

My 245/70-16's fit with no lift. no rubbing either. I would go skinny if you are worried about mileage though. Pizza Cutters!

Just like you said, you can't beat the price. It's the first set of AT tires I've owned so I can't compare them to anything else as far as noise. But in the rain I can't spin the tires even when I put the gas on when turning. The traction is really good. I'm selling my tires and wheels, $600 but I'm accepting offers.

I'd love to buy them but I only would want the tires since I have the 6 spoke alum sport wheels. Plus im in NY and by time you got done shipping I dont think it would be worth wile for you but give me holler if you cant sell em!!

I would be willing to ship the tires, but I recieved a quote today from UPS and they said that it would be about $68 per tire, which is about $270. I would ask $400 for the tires + shipping. Like I said they only have 5k miles on them. If anybody is in or close to South Florida, I would be willing to drop off if close, or meet in the middle if it is too far.
