Except it isn't plate flat...I can't wait to move to Ottawa, but I'm sure not looking forward to being so far from my mountains :cry: . Any good wheeling in the area of Ottawa? I didn't really see much from the highway, but it wasn't exactly great high-speed trail-spotting weather.

Hmmm..... It was about 75 here yesterday and I was outside in a short sleeve shirt washing my wifes Jeep. 8) Had to drive around with the windows down as it was getting warm when the sun was hitting us, not a cloud in the sky. :twisted:

Oh. That building. That is one of the worlds top 100 hotels. It's the Mount Washington Hotel, built in 1902 by an entreprenur with WAYYYYY too much money. Basically, it's one of THE nicest hotels in the world, costs a pretty penny to stay at, it's racked with history, beauty, and opulence. If it wasn't DUMPING, you'd be able to see Mt. Washinton (tallest peak in the northeast-6280ft and home of the worlds worst weather) right behind the hotel. It's one of 3 of the Grand Hotels (don't even think you can imagine the grand hotels, you probally can't :shock: ) still standing in New Hampshire, and as far as I know, they're the last of their kind anywhere in the country. There used to be 16 of them in NH, and all of them (except for one) burned down at some point in their history-the Mt. Washington was rebuilt after it burned down, and the Mountain View Grand was recently restored and reopened (but it's not even close to as nice as the washington). The Mount Washington was also the home of the world monetary conference in the 40's-the conference that set the US Dollar as the standard for international currency. It's an incredible building with AMAZING history behind it, in the same area that I plan on calling home in the near future. The hotel hosts all kinds of events and stuff throughout the year, perhaps a lost event could be counted among them? There's all kinds of great wheeling in the immediate area and surrounding 15 miles or so...with great scenery and friendly people.

Wow...ask me the time and I'll teach you to build a clock...
I just get carried away talking about things like that; that I have a great interest in, and NH history and culture is one of them...sorry 'bout that. Check out their website, there should be all kinds of information about the hotel and it's history there.

I just Love that area,Just up the road from the third picture is the AMC highland center where we stayed when we hiked thru N.H. on the Appalachian trail last year,Also looking to retire up there if I can get some land for cheap..

I choose to ignore the existance of that eyesore as much as possible...don't even get me started on it :evil: . "it's here for hikers" ....at $170 a night last time I checked...I dont think so. Nevermind that it isn't exactly on the trail. It's the biggest, most useless, poorly thoughtout (or is it?), pathetic excuse for an AMC structure that I've ever seen. You know what was there before the highland center? 4 acres of low-alpine meadow. Now its a parking lot and pointless building. It's pretty much the AMC equivalent of the Jeep Compass. There are PLENTY of AMC huts ON the trail that hikers can stay at, they shouldn't even bother saying that the Highland Center was built for hikers, they should come clean and admit that it was built as a tourist hotel...and the only reason that they were allowed to build it in Crawford Notch State Park is because they claim that it's a true AMC hut. Oh man....I'll just stop now.

We only paid $24 dollars each with meals included at the bunkhouse in front, and most huts on the A.T. are full every weekend,The highland center caters to family's with smaller children and older folks who still love nature.

For me what was out of place was the golf course & pool looking towards Mt Washington at the grand hotel..

They've been there since there were no trees in New Hampshire. Built in 1902 by a rich hotel baron with more money than he knew what to do with. There are actually 2 golf courses there, designed by Donald Ross to work with the landscape. The Hotel has been there long enough to become part of the experience, pretty much anyone will tell you that. It was built in the same era when clear-cutting 90% of a state to turn a logging profit was considered normal business practice. There was nothing there to destroy when the hotel was erected, unlike the AMC hut which is pretty new, and destroyed 5 acres of low alpine meadow.

Apparently the Highland Center isn't as expensive as it once was, or you may have gotten a discount since you were doing The Trail. The other thing is that the Mount Washington isn't pretending to be a hiker's paradise, and while it caters to the same crowd as the highland center, it isn't trying to be anything other than a grand hotel. And actually, I would go so far as to say that the Mt Washington Hotel has done MORE for that area's conservation than the Highland Center will ever do- considering that the ownership of the hotel granted a few thousand acres to the national forest program.

This is a pointless argument, you're the person that it was built for, and I'm one of the countless locals who was ignored when the highland center was built-you'll probally never be able to understand how we feel about the highland center. The grand hotels are part of our history, the highland center is an eyesore on a formerly beautiful alpine meadow.

I'll say it again-this is a pointless argument and we should just drop it because we'll NEVER agree on it.

Since I'm not native to N.H. you would know much more than I do,but it is a beautiful area and I hope it doesn't get anymore developed than it already is.Your right we received a discounted rate by staying in the bunkhouse out front which is a small and much older building but still very nice.

Here in CT. land is at a premium and trails we hiked and camped as kids are now private property with McMansions being built everywhere and many other trails are scared by ATV's.

Anyway maybe I'll see you up there shortly,Going up there to look at some land again for retirement..

You don't want to retire up here :wink: . The winters are harsh, property taxes are high, tourists run amok like wild chickens, it's awful :twisted: . In all honesty, you'd probally be really happy out in the western part of the state, if you're hellbent on coming to NH. The western area manages to avoid almost all of the tourist traffic but still have (almost) all the benefits of being up north. Retiring out that way is a better deal, IMO.

The Bunkhouse is fine by me, it's been there pretty much forever-provided we're talking about the one next to the train station. My problem is with the Highland Center...it's a hotel for the northface wearing, liberty driving (not like LOST-I'm talking average "look like you're outdoorsy" crowd that owns them), wear hiking boots all the time even in the city people.

Seriously, check out like...Claremont and surrounding areas for some nice retirement property. Pretty much anyplace in or around the conneticut river valley would be nice. Steer clear of Keene though-college town through and through. Dartmouth is nice too, good access to I-89 and I-91 too. Even better-check out the super-isolated areas for a nice quiet retirement, there's one place that I like to go jeep-camping that it sounds like you'd like alot. Some time over the summer you'll have to come up and check out the area with us-there's some good jeeping to get to the campsite (totally doable in a stock KJ) and you'll probally fall in love with the town. It actually happens to be where my girlfriend's grandparents live- her grandfather goes to the store on a 4-wheeler and his closest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away. Good deal.

I lived in that neck of the woods for a bit. I have a house in Glen right on 302 behind the covered bridge gift shop. I was also the pro at Wentworth Golf Club in Jackson for a bit too.....beautiful country.....good to see you guys got some snow!

Nope :lol: . There wasn't really much point since all of the roads still had snow on them and they would have been packed again in no time. Not to mention I wasn't going more than about 35-40mph because of said snow :lol: . It was a good time.
