Hello!

I am about to order my 2" daystar lift next week and cant decide on the tires. I either want 255/70/16 or 245/70/16. I just dont know if the 245 will fit, since the lift is only a 1.5-2.0" lift. I am either getting the GB AT2 or the Dueler.

Does anybody have pictures of either tire/lift setup?

Thanks,
Daniel

my 255/70 rubbed and sometimes still rub like crazy, if you can handle it you'll be fine, just expect with any larger tire just about, the pinch weld to be pounded and some of the front bumper to be trimmed

But were you running a lift with those tires? I was told they're not supposed to rub at all.... Maybe its because yours is not a CRD and has softer front springs.

My KJ isn't a CRD, but I am running the Daystar 1.5/2.0 lift on 245/70R16 Grabbers. Hope this helps.

Here is mine. Front 2.5" daystar lift w/ rancho struts. Rear, OME HD springs with OME long travel shocks. The tires are Goodyear MTR's 245-75-16.

Jan. '06 about a month after the lift and tires
Image

This makes a nice comparison shot for you. My jeep next to a stock '05. On the right a '03 with a 2.5" Rough Country lift running 265-75-16's.
Image

Here is another Good comparison. My Jeep next to Ugg's. His Jeep is a '05 CRD with the 1.5" Daystar. I’m not sure of his tire size but you can check with him.
Image
EDIT: I should also note. By the time this photo was taken I added extra spacers to get more lift.

Jason

Thanks for the pictures!

The guy with 1.5" lift on the Jasons last picture looks really small...compared to the 2.5" lift. I remember that alljeep had some really nice pics of his CRD and he is running the 1.5-2.0 setup with 255/70/16 I believe.

Ok, I'll bite 8)

Here are some fall time pictures I never got to post. As you can see, on the CRD the 1.5/2.0 lift works really good due in combination to the stiffer front springs and the small, but significant, factory front suspension cradle drop that is CRD unique, so you really end up with approx 2" all the way around... (I think my front measured approx 1.8", so barely lower than the rear - with a full tank of fuel and my toolbox, I'm dead level)

The 255s really fill up the space in the wheel well, but as you can see, there is still plenty of space left. I have NO rubbing with this lift and tire combo. This is due to the fact that my CVs are practically level. If I had the additional lift provided by the daystar 2.5" in the front, I'd have rubbing for sure as my tires/wheels would be closer to the engine bay due to the CVs being pushed down from level, thus pulling the tires closer due to geometry.

I also just got a camper to tow and the initial test drives were VERY nice with this lift/tire combo. This is a 2006 Fleetwood Highlander Sequoia and fully loaded it's about 4000lbs. My tongue weight was about 350lbs here and it still towed perfect up to 75mph with no problems. My rear was squatted about 1.5" so I might get a WD hitch, but maybe not as it towed just fine. I'll probably put my cargo rack in my front mount hitch and bring firewood on it - that should squat the front down a little and re-level it.

Image

On a side note... We're getting 10-15" of snow starting right now! Sure wish I bought the front hitch mount snow plow I was thinking about (SnowSport HD)... :(

Beautiful pictures alljeep! I will definitely get those tires. I ordered my lift last night so it should be here sometime this week, I hope.

I cant believe you can tow that camper with those tires on there. I guess that extra torque of the CRD makes all the difference. My 3.7 was a dog with the 255/70 tires. Im not sure how many hills you have to pull though. Thats when it got slow and I wasnt even towing anything. I could barely keep my speed in 3rd gear. :?

I don't know where everyone got the concept mixed up. The CRD does not have a cradle drop. The lower control arms are in the same position as the gassers. Our differentials are mounted lower INSIDE the cradle. This is why CRD’s benefit from straighter CV's with a lift than the gasoline Liberty. If the cradle was dropped thus moving the control arms and the diff. The CV's and axle shafts would sit at the same angle as a gasser just lower on the jeep. This is why the shaft collar idea will not work on a CRD. Since the Diff is lower in the cradle it sits closer to it. There is insufficient clearance to fit the collar without hitting the cross member that makes up the cradle. DurbyWalters and I both had to sell are collars since it will not fit.

With the control arms and spring mounts in the same position. There is no change in the geometry of the suspensions or difference in ride heights. The only factor there to change ride height would be weight of the Jeep and spring rate. Assuming the ratio between the two is the same you will not see difference. The CRD only sees a change in drive line angles. When you push the suspension down on a CRD with a lift. The axle shafts do not pull down as far with it.

This is where I got the idea of the CRD factory front cradle drop. 5th message down and supposedly measured and confirmed by the poster:

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... radle+drop

Here is the specific quote:

OzLtd wrote:
The CV angles are excellent, the CRD's benefit from that 1/2 inch cradle drop factory.

I also posted several times in the CRD section to get verification on this and no one ever responded to the contrary, just responses that verify. As I've been recovering from my 3rd back surgery I have not been able to get under the Jeep to verify for myself, but I will in another month.

Either way, the lift we are discussing produces more front lift on a CRD than it does on a gasser, this I have verified with fellow KJers. I still think there are more differences on the CRD from the gassers than all of us know yet. Maybe the upper mounting point for the struts is slightly lower, maybe our springs/struts are slightly longer, maybe our unibody frame box rails are slightly different in elevations and alignment.

Your description sounds just a plausable and the others I've read, but yet, I still get more front lift on my CRD than Video Guy did on his gasser with the 1.5" spacer...

The poster is asking for experience on this lift and I have tested and used it for over a year now. In my opinion, it's the perfect combination of road manners and intermediate off road capability.

I just wonder how many more small subtle differences there are on the CRD vs. the Gassers that we have not discovered yet.

I put these tires on with only 588 miles on the odometer and did not notice any loss of power. When I bought the camper, I took it for a test pull through the back hills of Brown County in Indiana - very steep - no problems. As long as I keep my engine rpm at 1600+ I'm getting close to 300 ft-lbs of torque and it really pulls hard. Having a turbo also really helps because regardless of the density of the air due to elevation, the turbo pulls more and more to compensate, so I don't expect any problems when I travel the country to go camping.

I think Oz is mistaken.

Here is the thread where I proved the difference in the differential and he got his info.
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=14354&highlight=shaft+collar

Yes you will see a little more lift on a mostly stock CRD. But it’s mostly from the 410lbs springs. They simply do not compress the same as a stock KJ. The vehicle weight vs. spring rate is better. Unless you are like me who has put over 700lbs (HD skids, Boulder Bars, on board air etc.) on his Jeep.

When my collar didn't fit. I was investigating the differences between the CRD and Gas. We looked up the Part numbers they are the same. Except the brackets that hold the diff in the cradle. Besides lower, the diff is also mounted further to the driver’s side. The inner CV sticks out further. Some CRD’s have problems with the bottom of the strut hitting the CV if the swaybar is disconnected. We also have different axle shafts to accommodate the different lengths. The J.E Reel HD replacements will not fit on the CRD.

Forgive me if I sound like a @$% here. That’s not my intention. I think OZ mistook what I said.

Oh my god I just got a quote for 4 255/70/16 Dueler Revo's => $725, thats crazy. 4 GB AT2's would be $600 at that place.

That is crazy, mine were less than your quote for the 4 Grabber AT2's you just mentioned.

$600 for the Generals is high. I paid $540, which included mounting, balancing, valve stems, disposal fees, sales tax, and road-hazard warranties for all four. Tires alone were only $460.

alljeep,

Great setup! I have nearly the same thing (minus the lift and front receiver). I too pull a Fleetwood popup and the CRD does it with ease averaging ~21mpg. My question for you regards your front reciever. What make and model is it? I have searched the internet and only found ones for the previous KJ model. Did you simply mount the previous or is there one made specifically for the 05-06? Being able to put firewood on the front of my Jeep would be great. Thanks in advance for a response.
