Post subject:	Trip down OBX - destination Ocracoke
For anyone that doesn't know, the Outer Banks are a little strip of land that runs along the eastern coast of North Carolina. You can drive on a number of the beaches and you can almost forget that civilization exists. Loaded up for a self-suffient week on the Outer Banks. Note to self...get diesel BEFORE entering North Carolina. Man they stick it to you!!! Riding the ferry to Ocracoke... Get settled in to the house just in time to drink champagne and watch the sun set over Crystal Lake. Day 2: wife + Jeep + beach + waves + dogs = Happy Brady No description needed... A sunset cruise well worth the price of admission... Day 2-7, more of the same... The Jeep makes a great doggie sunbrella (they force you to "leash" your pet on the beaches...I used a REALLY long rope)... Loaded up with our new orange tandem kayak (and the yellow tandem loaner that we took down with us).... I found another use for the Thule SpareMe bike rack...beach chair rack. The Ocracoke lighthouse... Had to take a pict of this contraption... 7 days later...riding the ferry back to the mainland...curious little Terra sticking her fuzzy head out the window...

wow, thanks for sharing those pics. looks so nice. great knack for photography you have there as well. I really like this picture!!! I am blown away by the 4x4 capability of the KJ!!!! Now that's climbing!!!

We took our friend's tandem down there, but ended up buying a new (used) tandem while we were there. It was actually part of the hopeful plan. They are always selling used rental kayaks along OBX in the Fall. You can never tell what you're going to find though, so we took along our friend's tandem just in case we didn't find something that I wanted to buy. My shopping list was pretty short: Wilderness Systems Tarpon 130t Ocean Kayak Malibu Two We lucked out this year and found the one orange WS Tarpon and two OK Malibu2s. I picked the WS Tarpon because I like it's lines better and because and I LOVED the orange. Doggie paddle. HA! Now there's a funny mental image. My wife's dog Terra loves kayaking with us, but she refuses to paddle, no matter how much I berate her. My dog Lou wants no part of it. He likes staying in the Jeep. Serious, on the beach, he laid in the passenger seat ALL day, only coming out to take a drink of water, or to water the dunes.

very nice photos, that contraption is or i should say was a dodge ww2 era truck called a WC (weapons Carrier), military use.....one of my other hobbies is WW2 reenacting, lol makes me sad to see all that crap on it. as seen pictured above fully restored.

It sure was a good time RedWolf. And thanks for the compliments on the picts!! Thanks for sharing the pict and info on the WC Coops03Freedom. That's a beautiful resto job you have a pict of there. Is it yours? The one down in Ocracoke is outfitted for retriving fishing nets. During WWII, the Outer Banks were used quite extensively by the American Military because it was a great place to watch for German U-Boats. It's my guess that the old WC seen in the pict is a left-over from that era. It's a really unique place where they still use what's around for what needs to be done. To this day, the majority of houses on Ocracoke are built with parts from ship wrecks. Use what's available. I use, almost exculsively, my Pentax Optio W30. It's a waterproof 7-MP digital camera. It takes really nice picts, fits in my cargo pocket, and can survive living with me...I tend to put my toys through their paces. I would recommed it to anyone who wants a good water-proof camera. It is, however, only waterproof to 10 feet, but it can last at that depth for 2 hours. It also takes movies with sound. The only limitation to your movie length is the size of your memory card. It takes SD mems and I think they go up to 4GB now. I only have 2GB cards and can EASILY take a whole vacation on one of them, even at the highest setting. Those tires are still chugging along Richard. Thanks! My next set is going to be larger, but these have really showed me the benefits of the BFG ATs.

Awww shucks. Thanks again for the compliments on the picts. Photography is not my strongest artistic talent, but I still enjoy it. We are very spoiled with a lot of beach-driving opportunities around this area. It begins to make up for the fact that I have to drive three hours to find a hill to drive my Jeep up.

I was raised back there. My Dad and I built a Dune Buggy which we took to Cape Hattarus yearly. Dad would surf fish and yours truley took the Dune Buggy and played all the day long. Well, now dad is gone and the Dune buggy is long gone also, but you bring back memeries of days gone by and happier times in my life . Thank-You

That's a beautiful Blue CRD Goglio704! That's the same color as my brother's CRD and, technically, the color I originally wanted a CRD in. I ended up finding such a good deal on the Dark Khaki that I got it instead though. Rush, glad we could rekindle your memories. Here are a couple more picts (pre-lift...taken a while back) to add to the collection: Ocracoke - bottom of the drivable banks (yes, I was boarding in those stormy seas) Sandbridge - top of the banks (I know, you can't drive straight down the Banks from here because of the park, but it's still geographically to north end of the Banks) Family beach outing Golf cart being swallowed by the Atlantic (this was on New Year's day after a gang of drunks got it stuck in the sand, we watched it get swallowed up slowly throughout the day). Wife and Ocracoke lighthouse Wife, champagne, sunset...

Besides, that was at a beach that we couldn't drive on, so no chance to get in there with a puller. The group of guys came back and tried to get it out, but they never did. I'd say the city came through and pulled it out at some point, but we never got to see it happen. We just sat on the back porch all day drinking Bloodies (hair o' the dog baby) watching the tide come in, pick it up, move it around a little, then ebb away, leaving it dug deeper in the sand. By the time the sun went down the tires were completely submerged under the sand.
