Post subject:  New intake installed
I went ahead an got the K&N 63-1103 Aircharger intake for my '05 Renny and installed it tonight... install was easy, no problems. I've installed an Injen intake in my previous car ('00 Sunfire) and it was loud as hell but definately improved power and mileage on that 2.2L four banger.

When I fired this one up, I was pleased that it wasn't loud at all... (K&N intake tube is plastic vs. the Injen's aluminum tube) thus, you can't even tell it's there from inside the cab (can't hear it over the magnaflow, anyway :lol: )... plus, when reving the engine, my Magnaflow has more of a bite to it and a nice gurgle when you let off the gas :)

During my wife's short test drive (perfect unbiased opinion) she says "the gas pedal feels different like i don't have to push it down as much"... so definately better throttle response right off the bat ...

We're taking a trip this weekend so we'll be able to tell any mileage increases and I'll report my findings ...

here are the pics... the filter cone is way bigger than i thought it would be, which is probably a good thing... plus it came with a nice heat shield as well.

Compared to the stock model, how well does the K&N keep water out of the intake? It looks like the water would soak the filter quickly and enter the hose.

I ordered it from cardomain.com of all places... regular price is $219 shipped free from there... but i pricematched the lowest price from froogle and they accepted it but the charge shipping on promotion code usage so it ended up being $213 after shipping and pricematch so i saved six bucks :roll:

anyway, as far as water, i'm not planning on forging any streams really, and before i plan on going on any trail rides, i'm gonna get the K&N Drycharger filter cover and slip it on when needed.

i must say that I was a little nervous ordering this kit because K&N only lists it for 2004 models, but it works fine for the '05... also, it's the only intake I could find that has the hole in the tube for that mass air sensor... plus did i mention that it's not aluminum? :lol: much more quiet than aluminum :wink:

I'm running the same set-up and like it alot. You can get what they calla "Dry Charger" and it is a water resistant sleeve that goes over the filter. I use it when wheeling only. Has been great so far!

I have pretty much the same set up. I got mine off ebay. Its got the K&N filter but it has a silver/chrome arm. I love it. Specially the sound that it gives off.

I will get some pictures this weekend.

i emailed K&N a few weeks ago to inquire about intake kits for the 2005 KJ's... never heard back so as you can see above i went ahead and bought the kit... :lol:

well, guess what... i just now got an email back form them :

Same intake on mine. Mine is full of bugs so I know it is working. I have not found one bug in my oil. :lol:

well... here's my update as promised...

we drove from virginia, il to champaign, il on friday evening... gas mileage was awesome... EVIC was reporting 23.1 and still climbing when we reached springfield... once on the interstate, we sped up to 70mph and were still getting about 21 mpg all the way to champaign... that night we drove a little around town before we spent the night at a friend's apartment.

the next day we drove to bainbridge, in... there was a steady cross wind and we still managed over 20 mpg by the end of your jouney into bainbridge... we drove around on some back roads and looke at covered bridges (pics of that later)..

on sunday, there was one heck of a headwind and rain all the way home... we were doing about 70 in indiana and 65 in illinois and 55-60 between springfield and virginia on the 2-lane... all in all, the entire trip we managed 19.6 mpg for an average... (that headwind on the interstate was killing the avereage for quite some time until we reached 2-lane driving and slowed down)

so, i'm quite pleased with my setup as it is... magnaflow, k&n, and mobil 1... this combination is probably giving me the best mileage i can get out of this thing... i'm sure i could take off my roof rack cross rails and gain a little more, but i like having those on there in case we need them...

Hey, I used to live in Bainbridge(very small) and I have family in Champaign, weird, I do miss that part of the country :cry:

back to topic, I have not seen any air intakes for the diesel yet, you gassers get all the good stuff!

rusty's air tube is a metal unit that fits between the stock plastic air plenum and the new k%n filter. the airtube is only around $30, way cheaper than relacing the entire plastic tube, why is that necessary anyway?

the stock air tube is corrugated like and accordian.. the k&n tube is smooth to allow less turbulance in the airflow.. also, rusty's "adapter" doesn't come with any sort of heat shield...
