Howdy all,

As most of you know, I had a situation w/my KJ over the weekend. What was ment to be 30 minutes of light offroading/exploring turned into a nightmare...I got stuck in mud on 5pm Friday and wasn't pulled out till 5pm on Sunday. I know I was foolish and had no business wheeling as ill-equipped as I was, but I was fortunate to have a couple friends around, one of which able to winch me out with his Wrangler. May it serve as a lesson to new offroad enthusiasts. Don't do what I did!!

Here are pictures taken from the rescue sequences on Saturday and Sunday:

-Saturday's Attempted Rescue w/a lifted Wrangler sitting on 33" tires.-

-Sunday's succesful rescue with a Wrangler equipped w/a WARN 9000 winch-

My buddy involved in the first rescue attempt later returned to the field while I wasn't there and gave my KJ a brand new paint job by slinging mud all over it!

Pulled me out like nothing ever happened.

-Video, taken by my automotive savvy friend, of the recovery and wheeling out of the field. (Video quality isn't the best, sorry).-

-Drybones, these next couple of shots are for you, as requested. My mesh grille inserts. Certainly not as fitted as yours, but I still like how it looks.-

Glad to see you got the KJ out & no harm to the rig. It's nice to have good friends that are happy to help, they shure have 2 nice looking TJ's.

You should now go and get some recovery points on your KJ

I noticed the rear widow of the wrangler with the winch.

Enough said. When all else fails, send in the Marines.

Get tow hooks or hitch with shackle. You should never go off road w/o recovery points.

Glad to see you got the KJ out and it's alright. I'm seeing the need for a winch too, might want to look into a front & rear hitch with a hitch mounted winch.

When I was looking iton recovery and wheeling set-ups for my KJ i saw a winch as a great cost effective way to add recovery capabilities to my rig. I would love to add traction in the form of lockers for at least the front, but that is no guarantee of not getting stuck. Aside from the alomst 1,000 bucks a diff for parts and install potential cost. So I went with the warn m8000. With the permanant mount in the ARB, i am stuck with a frontal recovery only, but I do not plan to wheel alone either.

I looked at the hitch mounted options and they look like a cost effective way of doing it with (what i felt was ) one MAJOR down side.

You may be able to do either a frontal or a rear recovery, but if you are pulling yourself out with a hitch mounted winch, depending on the conditions and how stuck you indeed are, you will need to be very careful as to the angle of the pull. Winch/hitch mounts are great for dead on 90 degree pulls from the KJ. But you start going off the 90 to a tree off the trail for an anchor point then you can put some stress on the hitch mount and can torque it pretty good.

Saw a guy bend the crap out of his hitch mount on his f 150 one day. Seamed like a good idea at the time and it did pull his truck out, but the entire hitch had to be cut off and the winch was saved but all that money for a mount and the hitch was toast.

Unfortunatly most good anchors are NOT directly infront or behind you when you get stuck, some are, most aren't.

Best thing is to NOT WHEEL ALONE.

Never thought of all that Woodys, since I've been on these forums I realized the 'no alone' point, I use to do it all the time and just lucked out by not getting stuck. Since then I haven't gone in alone. But now that you pointed out the recovery angle it makes sense too.

His truck was much hevier and loaded down, but it still did demonstarte a weak point. and it was very clear to me that it was a good idea that has a few serious limitaions.

Good Luck wheeling.

Could have been a lot worse. Based on what that area looked like in the video, I would probably gone in there and messed around too. Next time just make sure you can get one of your other Jeep friends to come along, and invest in a rear tow hook at least. They are always for sale used on this forum or at KJ Country

don't forget cheap winch recovery without buying arb or others is the kj backbone system that goes up on top of your stock bumper to add a winch plate for a winch. At half the cost of an arb and get the front recovery without losing some approach angle it seems like a good little unit as well might go with this after I lift with rustys see how time goes or maybe lift and then sell for a wrangler liking the new 2 doors alot. I think there are a couple guys on the forum running the backbone it looks slick.

Yep. In fact, both guys that tried to get me out are Marines. Can count on them anytime, they both came in a moment's notice.

I appreciate all the help and advice from everyone while I was trying to get my KJ unstuck. Was certainly more than enough to make a new member feel welcome here. Definitely have some mods lined up in the future, including front and rear tow hooks, although I'm amazed at how much a simple curved piece of metal costs.

Thanks.

I was actually the camera man the first segment of the video...my head was turned toward my KJ, watching in amazement at how easily it was pulled out...forgot to turn the camera the same direction that I was looking.
