I made myself some cross rails the other day. I needed to carry something the other day and realized I couldn't carry anything on the roof They cost me about $7.00 total to build. The 1" steel square tubing was free, paint I had lying around, the u-bolts $5.87 and the stylish end caps $1.99 So for $7.00 they will do the job just fine. I just need to modify the u-bolts and paint them black.
"Jeep" is just photo-shopped in, I hope JeepUSA don't mind.

nice. i like that they are low. are you going to put some type of support in the canter to keep them from bowing? |

naw, it's 1" square steel tubing, they are pretty rugged, I would worry about the stock ones giving before these bend. |

Pick it up? I built them at work the other day( while on my coffee break of course The end caps are 7/8 plastic beveled chair leg feet. I bought them at a hardware store. Out on the highway the rails make alot of noise at 60mph |

That looks great. I did the same thing a year or so ago with 1 1/4" square tubing. I just cut some square pegs of mahogany and glued them in with urethane glue. My racks have had lumber and other junk up there many many times....
Mine howl a bit if I'm driving into a headwind, but I just turn up the Pink Floyd, and I don't notice it anymore... |

I did something similar with another LOST member's idea but instead of foam where the u-bolts grip the rails I used a thick rubberized elctrical tape from the Depot ($3). Stick it on and it prevents rubbing. I can post more info once I get back home about brand name and such. Outdated pic, I have trimmed the length and primed and painted a textured black since this was taken.

Can you stand on them? I figured the mopar rails would be kinda weak but I stood on them(~160lbs) no problem. I think the limit on them is 150lbs but Im not sure if thats for both or just one. |

I know I can stand on mine. 1"steel tubing is very rigid. If you need more strenght than what these rails give, then I think you need to rethink putting such heavy load up on the roof. |
