Tow Truck in a Box Review

I bought 2 of the "Tow Truck in a Box - wide edition" traction aids and tried it out today. I tried it on ice going up a hill in 2wd. It just shot the thing behind the jeep because it couldn't get a grip on ice. Then i tried it on flat ground. I purposely got my rear wheels stuck in 2wd and then used the 2 traction aids. I could not get the tires to grip onto them even with using a shovel and digging under the tire and shoving it under there it would slip off. I figure i would have to dig under the ice under half the tire for it to work. I used 4wd to get onto the matts and once on them i put it back into 2wd and it worked after that. It does not work as good as advertised, that's for sure. Perhaps it will work better in other situations but so far i am not impressed.

here is a pic on horizontal ground. The tire could not get onto the matt and kept spinning on the ice. Perhaps i need to jack the tire up and slide it under? Not impressed.

What exactly is a power line right of way? Is it considered public property?

No problem. There is a quad and skidoo trail there. People off-road and use atv's along them all the time. Without cut-lines it would be impossible to get around with a vehicle through the forest. It is not illegal here.

It costs me $40 canadian. It still may prove to be useful but it is more work than i thought. You really have to do a lot of digging to get it to work.

can you rig it so you can stake it with a plastic tent stake or somethin? then it would become a matter of rockin a little to get it farther onto the strips

i could not rock it on the ice it just spun. Once i was on it, it worked fine. It just shot out the back when i was going up an icy steep hill. But it may work better on ice on flat ground. I had limited ways of getting 'stuck' in 2wd to test it out with my 32" MT tires. In order to get stuck on flat ground i had to back the vehicle off the trail in 2wd and still could not get stuck until i did a 'brake stand' so i would dig in. After i did that test, i let the air out of my tires to 15psi and backed into the 'hole' again in 2wd and drove right out no problems without the traction aid. That first pic was taken farther down the trail where the ground was more soft. There i used 4wd low and 15psi.

I was just wonderin, i had a set that had a Y sort of shape with the top of the Y being cargo strap sort of material with gromets for staking but they were also about 4 feet long each

come to think of it, the gear elf snuck off with those too, probably the same gear elf that took off with my ratchet extensions, the handle for my hydrollic floor jack, my 4 foot breaker bar and my portable jumpstart/aircompressor

ya, there is no holes. i would have to drill new ones. These are made for easier storage. You take them apart and stick them in a small box.

ahh, that sounds better than mine were, mine rolled up into a sleeping bag sized coil hehe

After having these things for awhile and having used them in an actual stuck situation I can say without a doubt that they are a complete and udder waste of money. I've tried them in snow/ice and in mud with equal results. I lost most of them in the mud. I didn't bother to retrieve them since they were useless. They don't work. Save your money.
