Shovel and Hi-lift mounted

I was tired of having this stuff in the back of my KJ so I decided to mount them up on my rack. The shovel was mounted using two u-bolts and then I purchased 4 wing nuts for easy removability. It works well.

Someone asked me why I would mount the Hi-Lift there instead of on the side or back of the rack. Well, I noticed that my rack was getting beat up by low lying branches when on trails. This way the Hi-Lift will protect it some. Also, it makes it easier to get the Hi-Lift down if its resting on the top of the rack instead of on the side. This way you can undo the bolts and lift. If on the side, you would have to undo bolts and somehow hold the jack from destroying your roof. The Hi-Lift is mounted using two U-bolts as well. The first is thru the top. No mystery there. The second is through two holes in the base plate. It is almost like those two holes are there for this reason. It is very sturdy. The wire you see across the center is a pistol lock I have around the Hi-Lift just for security reasons.

This was much cheaper then buying the extremely expensive 81 dollar Surco mounts (I only paid 48 for the jack). If those mounts where at least close to reasonably priced then i would have bought those as they are very nice but this works great and looks pretty good as well.

Just FYI... this is a 48" jack. The 60" jack would look a little weird mounted like this as it would stick out quite a bit.

Looks great. In regards to that cool shovel, let me ask you a hypothetical. See how nice and factory-fresh the shovel is? If that shovel meant the difference between life or death would you scratch it up? Let say you're on a tight switchback and you come around a bend a there was nothing but downhill ice. Do you use the shovel you scoop dirt and rocks onto the ice for traction? Or do you risk falling into the canyon to preserve the cosmetic integrity of your shovel?

ThunderbirdJunkie would solve both problems by keeping a beater shovel in the back of the KJ!

I'm pretty sure he spray painted the shovel black... :wink:

That shovel has been spray painted quite a few times. It's actually the second shovel I have had in my KJ. I guess that's what i get for buying the cheap 5 dollar wooden handled Wal-Mart shovels. You might notice the wood is now black and scuffed to hell. I apologize for having a shovel on my rig in plain view. Next time I will ask a real wheeler if its ok. You know where i might find one?

I'd advise you to turn the shovel around. Handle forward, shovel face inward. Better aerodynamics and less chance to catch tree branches & stuff.

Just such a dilemma faced one of our brave LOST members and the shovel reminded me of it.
