...and the fun continues at Day 2 of the Ouray Jeep Jamboree.

Day 2 would take us up to Mineral Point, through California Gulch, and back to Ouray via Corkscrew Pass.

Image

We started out on the steep, rocky section of the Alpine Loop Scenic Trail, heading towards Engineer Pass.

Image

Image

We got some help from our "tailgunner" Herb, who kept an eye on us flatlanders from Ohio. This was one of the more difficult sections of the trail.

Image

With help from Herb, we made it over unscathed.

Image

Our group had lunch at the abandoned mining settlement of Animas Forks. Most of the remaining buildings have been shored up and reinforced and are safe to enter.

Image

After lunch, we headed west into California Gulch.

Image

At the top of Corkscrew Pass, it began to hail...

Image

...and hail...

Image

...and oh, did I mention the hail? At this point, our leader Randy told us to basically get the heck off the mountain, as the hail was accumulating and there was lightning in the clouds. Standing atop a 12,000 foot pass above the treeline in a thunderstorm isn't such a hot idea. It was at about this point where Randy's 1982 Jeep Scrambler developed some carburator problems, and we had to get to the bottom leaderless.

Image

Growing up in Ohio, in an area known as the Snow Belt, a little bit of snow is no big deal. A little bit of snow on a narrow mountain road at 11,000 feet was a little more interesting. I was more concerned with the participants from Texas and San Diego.

Image

Near the bottom, where the hail had turned into regular old rain.

More adventures to come...

The hail was maybe an eighth of an inch to a quarter of an inch in diameter and didnt seem to leave any permanent marks...there was just a lot of it.

There are a lot of good trails and beautiful scenery in Colorado but I think the area around Ouray has the highest concentration trails and beauty I have seen anywhere. It is worth the trip. :JEEPIN:

Wow, kinda surprised to see this thread get dug up. Glad you guys liked the images. The whole Ouray-Silverton-Telluride area has jeep trails all over the place, from easy dirt roads through stunning scenery to white-knuckle brown-trouser roads that will make you wonder what you've gotten yourself into (we heard about them, havent tried them yet...Black Bear Pass and Poughkeepsie Gulch come to mind).

We did this through Jeep Jamboree, which was a really well run operation. The trail leaders knew their stuff and kept an eye on the 4-wheeling neophytes. A good time was had by all, and I highly recommend the Ouray Jeep Jamboree, if nothing else but for the amazing scenery (Jeep Jamboree considers this to be a scenic event, not a technically difficult one...obviously, as we made it through with a mostly-stock Liberty).

My wife and I hope to make it back out there this fall, hopefully with a better-armored KJ so we can hit trails like Black Bear and survive.
