Was having some custom fab work done for my LJ Rubicon, and so I towed it over to Hot Spring with the CRD so I could also do some trail ridding while it was getting worked on. She did great all weekend till late Saturday afternoon when the passenger side axle stub decided to let go. Not a single parts house had one in stock for a CRD, so had to leave it on the trail till yesterday when the parts came in. All in all, not too bad............I will just carry spares for both sides from now on!!!!!

On this obstacle, only me and 2 others attempted it, and this TJ had to pull cable........the KJ made it up without even spinning a tire!!!

Here's were things got interesting!!!! Level 4 out of 5, and made it past the toughest spots, only to bust on a fairly easy one 3/4's of the way up.

Yeh, to say the least........park manager said that Sunday, everyone who ran that trail stopped in and asked about the Liberty...........Everyone seemed to think I broke earlier, and someone tried winching it and gave up. They were dumbfounded to learn it was driven right to the very spot it sat. Sucks bad, cause I think the NAPA CV joint i had installed just a few months ago was defective. It didn't even looked like it was hardened, and no twist to the break at all like other axles I've seen when they let go.........also, the metal looked funny with alot of sparkle to it, so I'm uncertain of it's quality or alloy content.

Was it a remaned or "new" CV? If remaned there OEM stuff with new balls/cages and boots/grease.If new they where made in China.

Supposed to have been reman'd..........but how do you know that the company who does them gets oem shafts and not China made ones when people return theirs for exchange??? Here's a close up pic of the break. Of course, I'm glad it wasn't another front diff, that's for sure!!! That, and with a CRD's 300ft. lb of torque just off idle, I can understand how easy it can be for this to happen. I was trying to climb strait up a small ledge that was a bit wet, and the left side had most of the weight and pass side was unloaded somewhat. While slowly spinning to the top, it lost traction and slid back about a foot or so and BAM!!!

I would try and have that shaft replaced under warranty.
Theres no way it should have broken so easily, especially at the spot it did.

As far as the LJ rubi not making it up, well thats due to driver error. lol
Locked LJ vs a KJ with a LSD, the LJ 'should' win in a spot like that.
But, seeing as he had to pull cable, that just means he's not as good of a driver as you. :-)r

Well it looks like other hardened OE shafts breaks.....................

The above are hardened OE axles, not alloy axles.

The below are alloy axle breaks, notice they tend to have a perfect and clean break, some may show a twist action but still a clean break.

From what I see there would of been quite a bit of torque going to that wheel more than likely
How many have you actually seen with your own two eyes
Looks normal from ones I have seen and broken myself over the years ( not in the KJ but others)
I had a CJ with a 304 that would snap them off like that almost every other week if I wanted to get stupid on the skinny pedal ! :ROTFL:

No, it wasn't a Rubicon LJ. Just a regular one with a 3" lift, 33's and only a rear limited slip.

I've seen several d35's and AMC 20's, a few front 30's and 44's and one 60. I guess I was just surprised it was the axle stub that let go instead of the CV. As this is the 1st IFS axle I've seen break. Every other time I seen front end breakage on an IFS rig (mostly Chevy's, and Toyota's with one Exterra thown in), the CV's or center diff seem to break way before an axle shaft. And like I stated earlier, I know how it happened, just seemed it broke a little too easy.

Thanks!

On a side note, NAPA replaced the axle free of charge, with no questions asked!!!
