Ok......so the old heep sits over night, or for more than 6 or 8 hours, and it cranks (turnsover fine),,,,,,,but doesnt want to start. I release the key, try again and it starts up. Kinda like its not getting fuel???? oh......and the heep has 160,000 miles on it........but stills runs like a champ. Any ideas???? |

Fuel issues sound like a possibility. Can you here the pump prime when you turn the key? |

Have you replaced your fuel filter recently? That may or may not help but from what I have read recently, it is common for the fuel to bleed back out of the fuel lines and take longer to prime the system. Try turning the key to the on position twice before cranking and see if that helps. It works on mine. There is a mod some are doing with the check valve from a BMW (IIRC) that they put in the fuel line to keep the line pressurised. I will see if I can dig that up and post it here. Stupid XJ! |

If you crawl up under the left rear of the Jeep, look behind the tank near where the upper shock mounts are and you will see the filter. The pump is in the tank and they are usually tough to hear. I can't hear mine either unless I am under the Jeep when the key is cycled. Mine has been doiong the same thing so I will be doing my filter here soon though I don't know for sure that will cure it. |

1998............................ Yea I have searched NAXJA a whole bunch..... even bothered MJR, for some insight......... I just HATE guessing at a part.......its eithier $108 for a crankshaft sensor $230 for a new fuel pump/filter assembly....... OR...... Take it to a mechanic....so I dont have to guess......Priceless..... I just kinda want to fix myself......SO....I'll have to investigate a little more...... |

Well, if you do the CPS and pump/filter you will probably still be ahead of what a shop would charge you and you would have a new CPS and pump/filter. |
