Most ranchers and farmers that I know like the skinny tires for traction, even mud traction. But like JL said, there are times when there is pure slop under the top 10 inches of slop. In these rare situations where there is nothing but mud on top of mud, then a wider tire with mud traction will keep you afloat. In the case scenario of slop on top of slop, the skinny tire will actually take you down deep in the mud until you’re good and stuck. For the most part, the Southwest United States and the Rocky Mountain regions do not experience that type of bottomless mud that I call slop. :D

it all goes back to where you live for sure,
no one size/width etc is the "best" for everywhere.
For a DD/Weekend off roader every tire is a compromise, at least I think so!

Me I want 34x9.5s for the trail and 305-70s for the street, think I may have to lift it just a tad more though

These tires were excellent for rock crawling but are a at a huge disadvantage here where the only thing under the mud is more mud.

Again, keep in mind that the MT/R is not a mud terrain tire and was never marketed as such. The tire itself may be the issue as opposed to the size.

If you can keep up enough momentum & wheelspeed to float over soft surfaces, wider is better. If you can't float on top, then a thin tire digging in is the best option IMHO. The KJ is a little porky to be at top-notch floater

Tom: I went with 34x10.5's on my trail beater. I wish I could slip them under the KJ, but I don't see that happening even with Advanced Sawzall 2.1. It is a pisser as they fit on the '79 without a lift & have no rubbing.

thanx for the input. I've heared that the narrower tire works a little better on the hard packed/icy stuff. My bfg at ko's work really well in the fresh stuff, but get really squirrely once the plows have at the road and you can see your reflection. I think i'll take a look around our vehicle maint. shop and see if we've got any 235's laying around just to see how they fit and feel on the kj. thanx again guys.

So to all of you who have 235/85r16 I take it that it has not really put any dampers on engine or tranny?

you really need to regear or you will feel the loss of power and mpg if you don't.

I have been toying with this as well the 235/ 85 vs the 265/75. I have a CRD and my front end has dropped alot IMO since the FLII settled. plus the fact that I have the TR bumper and am about to finally put the winch on. I sure hope i can find away to gain some of that height back. but as far as the tires go, im wondering of the two choices which one will make her look taller. and perform better off road. I usually put my OEM on when i just drive around town to help save a few MPG's.

4:10's is your answer...................... IMO, a taller tire will look better and give you some height.

But you better get them quick, because they might not be around forever for a cheap price.

235/ 85 vs the 265/75 Are the same height tire (( 31.7" )) the only thing different is the tire width. Which is a different question......
((corrected))

TJ Rubicon Moabs? So you have a 16X8 Rim? You shouldn’t go any smaller than a 245 in a 8” width rim. Most will say no smaller than a 255 if you’re planning to off-road and air down.

My 265/75's are 31.9" tall,measured height.Most 235/85's and 265/75's are around the 31.5"-31.9" tall measured height,not 30.7" which is 245/75's.

yes my OEM Rubi Moabs :) so then going with a 235/85 on that wheel is bad then? so i should go with the 265/75? Im running the 245/75 MTR's now, but as i said earlier i would like a lil more height.

0311_DoC, I’m not a tire/wheel expert so take everything I say with a grain of salt. But, if you go too wide on your Moabs, then you will be rubbing on your fender flares. This is why most of us (who have Moabs, including myself) have decided to buy a cheaper steel wheel (such as the Cragar Soft 8’s in either a 15X7 or 16X7) with better backspacing. The Cragar Soft 8’s, for example, will allow you to run a taller/wider tire without rubbing on the flares or the sway bar.

Assuming that you are wanting to go with a 31” tire or taller, then here are my top 5 notable improvements.

1. 4”10’s will put you closer to your factory specifications. Meaning that your engine and transmission will not have to work so hard, therefore prolonging the life of your engine and transmission.
2. Your engine and transmission will run cooler temperatures, again prolonging the life of your engine and transmission
3. You will return some fuel economy. Depending on the height and weight of your tire, you may even see up to a 2mpg increase.
4. You will regain some low-end torque and a more efficient power curve
5. You will increase performance in the area of towing and mountain driving
ALSO............if you saved 2 mpg, then the gears would pay for themselves. 8)
