I may have missed it but did we ever solve the ability to do a complete rotation with these, not just a front to back?

They are asymmetrical tread,as long as the word "outside" is facing outside you can mount them at any corner you wish. Basically means yes you can cross rotate them since they are not directional.

Yep, inside to outside mounting is important but they can be run on any side of your jeep in any rotation pattern.

So, did anyone decide to try these out? Any reports on or off road?

I have purchased a set and am picking them up later today. Problem is I won't be able to mount them for a while.

Anyone else bought these and have any feedback. I'll be sure to review them when I get them on my jeep.

Unless if you unmount them, turn the tires around, remount them, rebalance them!! Which would be a hassle and expensive overtime!!

you dont have to unmount them and remount them. the word outside is going to be outside no matter what side of the car the tires on. they can be rotated to any corner you want without dismounting. the only tire that has to be unmounted and remounted is a directional tire which the new mt/r is not. the white letter sidewall of the new mtr is the only side that can be mounted outside.

I work with a guy who has a F150 and the new Goodyears. He bought them because of this road we sometimes have to go up and it gets REALLY muddy. The road is nothing but 6 miles of switchbacks and 3000 feet change in elevation up the hillside. He says he is really impressed with the tires.

4Wheel Drive and Sport Utility magazine did a 4 page tech article on the new MT/R with Kevlar in the July 2009 issue.

Quote:
"The asymmetric tread design benefits both off-road traction and on-road handling".

"The most apparent change to the Wrangler MT/R is the wide, staggered sidewall shoulder blocks. the blocks are separated by tread guards and are stepped in and out to provide continuous biting edges around the tires self-cleaning ability and traction in mud".

"C and D load range MT/R tires use 2 polyster, 2 steel, and 1 nylon belts, while E loadrange tires feature an additional nylon ply. All of the tires feature 2 polyster and 1 kevlar plies in the sidewalls".

"The most impressive of the tests for us was the Goodyear Sidewall Penetration Energy test. The test was taken at Goodyear's agriculture division where tractor tire sidewalls had to withstand the force of a shearded corn stalk. For the test an LT285/70R17 load range D tire inflated to 65 psi was used. The tire was dropped on a chisel fro varied heights to determine its puncture resistance. The new MT/R with Kevlar showed a 35% increase in sidewall puncture resistance. We were astonished at this mainly for the amount of air that was used in the test. We typically run our 40 inch old school MT/R's at 8 to 10 psi on the trail and 28 to 30 psi on the pavement. Knowing that the sidewalls withstand punctures at 65 psi is very comforting".

"The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon vehicles used to test the new Wrangler MT/R's with Kevlar were subjected to varied terrain throughout the day. In addition to the off-road testing we also traveled about 80 miles round trip on the pavement. Ride and handling were very acceptable with ride quality that rivaled that of all-terrain type tires".

"The MT/R with Kevlar is available in 30 popular sizes".

The whole article has persuaded me to lean towards these tires once I install a lift. But I too will be interested to hear what other's running them have to say.

The magazine's written article (July 09 issue) isn't yet available on the website but, here is an editorial blog written on the tires before the July article came to print.

And here is a video of Rubicon's running MT/R's with Kevlar.

Directional tires are a pain to rotate properly. Unless you want to run the pattern backwards like the F150 in the pic. :?

Yes directional tires are a pain, but these tires aren't directional, and are sweet. They barely fit in the back of my jeep. There is also no white letter side of the tire either. Both sides are black all the way. The compound on these is the hardest I have felt that I can remember. I checked these, the KM2s, Di ck Cepek Mud Country, Dunlop Rovers, Toyo Open Country MT, and Interco Trxus and the MT/Rs are the hardest. That should mean a nice long life but they may chunk like my old MT/Rs did. We will see.

I like the new mtr/kevlar as we all know the mtr is an exellent tire and also as we all know, nothing ends the day like a sidewall puncture, and anything you can do to reduce that, the better. Around here they are priced competitively aganst km2's. However

THEY ARE DIRECTIONAL, you CANT use your spare in your rotation and your 50% screwed as to weather your spare will work for you.

ALSO they don't make them in 235 85 r16

I really wanted to buy these tires, if for nothing else than to compare them to km2 and old mtr. I almost hope the mtr-k's suck :P Because i just bought 5 km2's.

Maby i should have gotten the mtr-k x4 and an mtr x1 for spare? ah well.

Hello, I have 2 sets of the new MT/R's already and they are great tires. I Have one set on the JK and one set on my TJ. They rock!

They are not directional. They have the side that is mounted out on the rim, but can be used in any position. As long as they are mounted on the rim correctly, they can go left or right. If you do 5 tire rotations, they are always correct when you move them.

I've had the MT/R's on my TJ, already out on 6 trails in 4 weeks. Plus about 600 miles on the road. On the road they are sticky! They are quiet, handle great on the corners, and overall very smooth. Kind of like floating on cloud down the road.

On the trail, they grip well, the sidewalls flex nice, and the Kevlar sidewalls are very nice aired down. They remind me of bias sidewalls, where they don't have the bounce when aired down. Traction wise I would say they feel about the same in the rocks so far, but I haven't been to the hammers yet. They do clear mud way better :) They also stick in the rocks well when wrapping around rocks.

Overall, I hate change, but these new GY MT/R Kevlars are a very good change to a tire starting to get a little dated. BTW, I love the looks of them!

I too went with the new GY MT/Rs with Kevlar. Just had them installed on Friday on my KK and love them.

I really like the change in appearance it has given my KK (especially since I haven't seen any modified KKs around my part of the country). I wish GY had an option for black sidewalls on the 245/65R16 size of these tires. In this size, and since they're asymetrical, you can currently only get and install these in OWL.

Having never owned off-road tires, nor a 4x4 until getting my KK 3.5 months ago, I had some apprehension if the MT/Rs would be too loud on-road. I was surprised that their loudest humming is at about 35-40 mph. They actually seem quieter to me on the interstates around here than on the intermediate roads. I have noticed that the quality of the road surface makes more impact on road noise than with other tires (and vehicles) I've owned. I'm quite pleased with these MT/Rs so far. I'm anxious to get them off-road.

I have just over 50K miles on my MT/Rs. I run them at 15 PSI on the trail and 35 - 40 PSI on the road. The have performed excellently at 12K feet in CO to the deserts of MOAB to the swampy muck of FL. They are getting below the 1/2 tread mark and based upon how these have performed, I will replace them with the new Kevlar when the time comes.

i'm confused... why does it matter which side of the tire is mounted towards the outside of the rim (with say white letters out) if they arent directional.. because when you put the right front on the left front it will reverse the tread pattern. so the tire/wheel that was on the right front tire that you switched to the left is the same as if you had it on the right with the white letters in towards the jeep? does not make any sense at all

they look to me like they are directional.. the side bitters would not do the same reversed as they would forward.. and the tread has a V shape to it.. like almost all other directional tires i've seen...

OK just out of curiosity how much are you seeing the tires for?

I got a quote from Merchant Tire while I was having my alignment redone (the reason I need tires) and they quoted me about 1500 for them installed and 280 ea tire.

This is for 265/75 r16.
