First post and completely lost! Cragar rims on stock tires?

Thanks for the great community forum. I have been reading and researching for hours. I am looking to putting on Cragar Soft 8's and seem to be confused about something. It seems that most people using cragar's are lifted and all have the nicer tires. The new liberty is an 2004 and is going to remain fairly stock for the most part.

Now I am looking to put on Cragar's but want to keep the stock tires 235/70/r16. So would I be looking to getting 16x8 Cragar's 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, and 5" backspacing?

That sounds about right....but make sure that the stock tires are capable of fitting the wider rim...I think the stock rims are only 7" wide whilst you seem to be looking at an 8"...it could work but I see that being the only issue perhaps...check out the tire section below in the tech area and you might be able to find something down there that might help you....that is to say if you haven't already visited there...WELCOME to lost too by the way and maybe a better answer for you will show up in about 5 hours or less from another more experienced member....

Your stock tires can be mounted on rims between 6"-8" check on tirerack.com and punch in 235/70 R16's,then choose goodyear,all LT tires,and scroll down a few the the SR/A's.Look under specs and it will tell you the rim width range,ideal would be 7" though.

* inch rims with less backspacing are going to cause major rubbing on stock parts. You have increased the "arc" the wheel/tire combo travels.
Take two straws...cut one in half...mark a start point 0 degrees and make a mark at the end of the straw(the end that is going to move)...now with one end stationary move the straw 45 degrees and put a mark at the end of the straw...measure the distance between the two marks. Next take the full length straw and place it at the same starting point...mark the end of the straw...move it 45 degrees and mark...now measure the distance between the new marks. The distance the outside edge moves will be greater. You wheel/tire combination works the same way but on a much smaller scale of course.

So is it possible then without it rubbing? I dont get it and have read all threads containing the word cragar very thoroughly.

16x7 has 4" backspacing which seems to be way to far out
16x8 has 5" backspacing which seems to be to large or a rim width

In my own opinion the 16x7 will not rub.

I have those same rims on my kj but i have 245/75 MTR's mounted on them. With that bigger tire I had to trim the pinch weld but that was it. It only rubbed slightly there anyways. So with your stock meats you should not rub at all.

I have the 16x8 w/5 BS on my jeep and they are fine. I do wish I would of gotten the 16x7 w/4" BS b/c of weight. The 16x7 rim will stick out the same as the 16x8 b/c its not as wide.

I went ahead and ordered 16x7 with 4" backspacing. I will let you all know how it goes on a stock ride.
