Will having tires of the same size, but different weights, cause any problems? Here's my situation. I'm getting a set of Moabs with 1 new MTR and 4 worn MTR's, one needing patched/plugged. I'm not really buying them for the tires because I'm not lifted yet and do not plan on running MTR's once I am. So if after I'm lifted I buy a set of say 245/75/16 Destination AT's (about 40lbs each & 30.4 in.) would it be OK to keep one of the MTR's as a spare? The new MTR would be 50lbs and 30.7 in, while the worn tires would be roughly the same weight, but probably closer to the same size of 30.4 in. I'd lean towards keeping a worn MTR because I'm only doing a OME/Rancho lift and would be afraid of serious rubbing if I got a flat in the front. If I kept a worn MTR as a spare and I got a flat on a rear tire, would it harm anything to run one 40lb tire and another 50lb tire together on the rear axle until I got the tire fixed? If I kept the new MTR as the spare, would running it at 30.7 in. to 30.4 in. for the AT and 50lb to 40lb hurt anything? Just asking to see if I can save some cash when it's tire time, being I'm getting some tires with the Moabs I'm buying anyways. |

I would not worry about the 40-50# of tire that shouldd be fine its the 100# of tire that breaks stuff The biggest problem with tires is size and that is only a problem if you are locked with a Detroit or a Powertrax I would say keep the best of the 5 for your spare and replace the rest Rember that a spare tire is just that a spare but if you are like me and go out wheeling for 2 or 3 days in a row if you get a flat on day 1 then you can not wheel for 2 days on a miss mached tire if it is the same size then no biggie but a stocker on the same axel as a 245/75R16 is bad |

I picked up the rims & tires today and one of them (the spare) is only slighty used, so I'll probably keep that for a spare in the future. That will save me the $100 - $150 I would of spent on a 5th tire, far more then I could sell it for. I do have the LSD rear, but I guess from what you said the 10 lb difference will not matter, as long as the tires are similar in size which they are. It's actually better that the MTR that I will use as a spare is a little worn, because when new they are 0.3 inches taller then the tires I will be buying. Thanks for the input. |
