Spare Tire

Anyone know the shelf life of a spare tire?

Original from when the Jeep was new (2002), never touched pavement or been removed and always covered.

I never switched it out when I bought new tires figuring I would only use it to get home or to a gas station if I got a flat. Well (knock on wood), I never got a flat surprisingly enough. So now I'm wondering if I ever did get a flat, would it still be safe to use?

Also, how many people leave their spare uncovered? I kind of like the look but I'm thinking it might increase the life of the tire covered.

Any tire will dry rot over time, In theory if it is covered it won't dry rot as fast. I Leave mine uncovered. Besides who cares if it dry rots if it is the junky OEM Goodyear

Next time you buy tires consider buying 5 and rotate the spare when you rotate the tires.

Looking at it quickly, it doesnt appear to be any dry rot but I dont know for sure.

I just bought new tires about a year ago and they are holding up very well. By the looks of it, I wont need new ones for a while so I was wondering if I should replace the spare with what I have now. Obviously I couldnt include it in the rotation at this point but I know now for the next time around.

You could put it on and see how it does, then you'd know if it'd work when you'd really need it. Just remember to check the air once and a while.

Check the sidewall for cracks. If it's cracked it's dry rotted. Joe

I checked it out last night with the cover off and there isnt any dry rot plus from what I can tell the back side looked good too I think. I never checked the tire pressure or had to fill it up so tonight I will probably check that too.

I might just save up and buy a matching spare, it would be worth it for the piece of mind factor alone. I dont know, I will have to see how the holiday's treat me. =)

3-4 years, you should still be OK. When I had a commercial fleet, the service rep for the tire supplier didn't want to see anything sitting over 2-3 yrs in the spare tire compartment. Would have us put the tire in service and replace with new as a regular stock rotational thing. You are on the right track, buy a matching tire (or 3) and put in in rotation. Replace the spare with something worn but still usable.

I can probably swing one, but I dont know about three. I have Cooper ATR's and like them a lot and will most likely get them again when it's time. So buying one as a spare wont be bad for now and when I replace the others I can start the 5 tire rotation.

Guess I should have asked if you had a tire combo worth keeping.

I spun-out for the last time today on the factory Goodyears. Stopped at the tire shop on the way home and got rid of them. They asked if I wanted the old tires as they still looked ok, told them to scrap them before someone gets killed.

Firestone Destination LE in 245/70/16 which is a 60K mile agressive highway tread. They are very quiet, can now hear the background whistle of the turbo over the road noise on the expressway. Set of 4 was @ $445 with install & sales tax.

I noticed that Firestone just raised their prices in the past few weeks. Some of the things I did notice is 225/75 & 235/70 sizes are slightly cheaper than 245/70. Destination LE is also less money than Destination AT and has a longer warranty.
